The Cell Story

1.

“Line up people!” General Millhouse commanded. We were all getting ready to escort the oxygen or glucose from the respiratory system and the digestive system. As I was passing the checkpoint that checks our health and physical strength and more, General Millhouse pulled me out of line.

“Sir, what is the problem?” I asked.

“I have an important task for you Private James. I want you to accompany our new private Hullington on his first escort mission.” General Millhouse then pointed to Private Hullington. He didn’t look that strong and was short.

“I understand general.” I floated toward Private Hullington, “Now welcome to the CES, short for the Cell Escorts. Just follow and copy me and then this will be a smooth and successful mission.” Private Hullington nodded with agreement. As we got passed the scanners I could see all the glucose and oxygen molecules speeding around.

“Now Hullington, you just want to grab one of the first ones you can and then follow me.” Private Hullington nodded with agreement. As I was catching up to one of the oxygen molecules, I could see from the corner of my eye Private Hullington waiting for me. I grabbed the oxygen molecule and gave a signal for Hullington to follow me. “ Great job Hullington” He gave a weak smile. As we floated up to the line to get to the veins, I decided to inform Hullington.

“This is the line to get to the Vein Headquarters Hullington. To give you a brief summary of things, we are traveling in this line which is only for respiratory molecules. We traveled to the lungs and are now traveling to the heart. We travel like this basically: travel through the vein from lungs, go to the left atrium, then go to the left ventricle, and then we travel through the artery to the body.” Hullington just nodded again “ I guess he must be nervous,” I thought to my self. “To make this easier, give me your new journal.” Hullington slowly passed his journal towards me. “I’m writing the way we travel, lungs-vein from lungs-left atrium-left ventricle-artery to body-vein from body-right atrium-right ventricle-artery to lungs. That’s basically the way we travel, but I could go into more detail for you” I explained to Hullington.

“You…could just…write it now…” Hullington whispered.

“Yes, great idea Hullington! I now know you can speak” Hullington gave a short laugh. “ Okay, from the left ventricle the blood is pumped into the aorta, which is the largest artery in the body. Now don’t worry private we’re not going to die, we’re just going to be given a different job. The body is a big place you know, a lot of jobs to do.” Hullington laughed “I don’t see how that was funny but anyways, after we pass through branching arteries, we flow through tiny capillaries in different parts of the body, you know like the brain, arms, lungs, legs, well you get it. After doing all that traveling we still do this job again because we continually go around, but there are break stations along the way.”

“So umm, couldn’t some cells like ourselves just stay in a break station or go home and not come back to work?” Hullington laughed.

“I guess they could, but they have enforcers and other organs and cells that depend and need our help sometimes,” I smiled. This Hullington guy was a real comedian I guess, I guess some people need comedy relief sometimes. “Well Mr. Comedy, now that you want to talk, tell me some of the stuff they taught you in training school because I’ve never been there. I was taught everything I know from my father”

“Well, in “school” we learned the organs, cells, systems, nerves, and other stuff. For example we learned the parts of the heart.”

“Go on Mr. Comedy!”

“Okay, we learned all the stuff you talked about earlier, such as, the aorta, ventricles, and the atriums. We also learned about the pacemaker and septum. Oh by the way I think this is where we travel to other places in the body.”

Hullington was smart, I have to admit that. “Good luck Mr. Comedy, maybe we’ll see each at another job and you can give me some comedy relief,” We both laughed and went our separate ways.
=D The good memories of the 7th grade.
