Beautiful

She would spend hours staring into the mirror that was in her room. Comparing her body to other people's. Wanting to change all the bad things about her. And today was no different.
On the outside she looked normal. Like any other 14 year old girl. Listening to music, getting on with everybody at school, not having a care in the world. She was Kayleigh, a perfectly fine, young girl just simply trying to get on with life. If only life was as simple as people think. The inside of Kayleigh was different. Tragic life events had lead to self-harming, low self esteem and poor body image. But nobody knew of this. For her, life was like a box and she was trapped in it.
She glanced in the mirror as she walked past it. Hesitating she walked back. Flicking her hair back out of her face she looked into the mirror. Poking and proding the body she hated so much, a look of disgust formed on her face. She couldn't believe how ugly she was. Her nose was big. She was fat. Nothing was right. Everything was just wrong. All these thoughts ran through her head. Tears slid down her cheeks. She was never going to be pretty enough. No one would want her. That night she cried herself to sleep. This was a routine that lasted for a while.
One night she took off her make-up, ready to go to bed and looked in the mirror. She saw a girl who was pretty. Her eyes glistened, staring right back at her. Kayleigh realised something. This time she really couldn't believe her eyes. Who needs make-up to look good? You just got to believe in yourself. Over the next few weeks she began to realise that life wasn't so bad if she just acted herself and became more confident.
'You don't need make-up or plastic surgery to look pretty. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. Doesn't matter what size you are, how bad or good your life is or how popular you are. Everyone is beautiful.'
