Purple Hearts

Explanations

Billie drove Adrienne home in silence. It was obvious that she didn’t want to talk about whatever had happened but she looked awful, something had happened and he wanted to get to the bottom of it.

They entered the house, once again in silence. Adrienne headed off to the kitchen and got herself a glass of water but Billie went to another cupboard to get out something stronger for her.

As he turned he looked at her. She was a mess. Billie had never seen her in this state before. He handed her a brandy and watched her take a sip. She winced, not being used to such a strong drink.

“Where were you Adie?” he said quietly. She sat down at the kitchen table; she hadn’t looked at him yet. “What the fuck happened?” he said coming to sit down next to her at the table.

Suddenly she looked up at him with her huge brown familiar eyes. They were full of tears, her voice slightly croaky as she spoke. “It was Tre. He…he….”

“He fucking what?” Said Billie, angry.

**

Tre’s doorbell went just as he was about to muster up the courage and go to Adie’s to explain. He’d been ringing Billie and Adie’s house but had got no answer, he got worried then, where on earth had she gone? He recognised the figure through the glass door as he approached.

Opening the door, he smiled widely, “Billie, you’re back dude,” he said happily.

“Yeah, I’m back and…this is for you,” said Billie lumping Tre on the side of his face.

Driving home from Gerard’s Franky was mulling things over in her mind. She would start to show soon and thought it was time to tell her father but first, on the way home she’d drop off at Adrienne’s just to see if Billie was there. He probably would be, where else would he be unless he’d gone for a walkabout again. She felt as though telling him would ease things slightly, telling him that there was a possibility of him being a father again. He hoped he’d understand. She’d have to do it, it would only be fair on him, and after that she’d tell her father then Gerard and James.

She was ready.

“Billie, leave him,” said Adie appearing from behind.

Tre was holding his face.

“Billie, you’ve got the wrong idea,” Adie said her voice croaky once more.

“But…but you were upset, your clothes,” said Billie.

“I…I holed my tights while putting them back on, I just didn’t do my buttons up properly because I was in a hurry, I wanted to get away I…I was ashamed.”

“Ashamed?” said Billie totally confused, what the fuck was going on here.

“Adie!” Shouted Billie who was getting quite annoyed now, “what the fuck were you ashamed of?”

Adrienne blushed a deep red. She couldn’t look at Billie, or at Tre.

“I…I can’t say,” then she turned, tears streaming down her face and ran upstairs.

Billie was kind of standing there wondering what the fuck all this was about, he turned, Tre was looking down at the floor still holding his cheek.

“That fucking hurt Billie,” Tre said.

“I’m sorry,” said Billie, “can you explain about any of this, she mentioned your name but wouldn’t say anything more, so I headed round here, I didn’t realise she’d followed me.”

“Come in here,” said Tre ushering Billie into the kitchen, “I’ll try and explain.”

**

“So she had a lie down because she had a headache?” said Billie looking at his friend.

“Yeah, I cleared away the dishes. She’s spent a lot of time over here recently since you disappeared, we’ve kind of kept each other company.” Said Tre looking at Billie. “I just didn’t realise.”

“Didn’t realise? Care to explain?” Said Billie. What the hell had been going on since he’d been gone?

Tre sighed.

“She called me upstairs, she sounded like she needed something, I told her to call me if she wanted me so I went. The door was closed and when I opened it she was,” but he couldn’t say.

“She was what?” said Billie.

“She was…naked.” Tre sighed once more not able to look at his friend.

“Billie she came on to me and I…turned her down,” said Tre wincing slightly because it kind of sounded unbelievable.

“What?” Billie responded.

“Billie, this is embarrassing. I love Adie but not like that. She’s beautiful and fun to be with but…”

“Tre Cool turning sex down,” said Billie.

“Don’t you believe me?” said Tre.

“Not sure,” said Billie. He knew what his friend was like.

“Its true,” said a voice from the doorway.

Adie.

“I offered myself to him and he turned me down. I didn’t expect that,” she said looking directly at Tre.

Tre felt embarrassed at this situation.

Billie was shocked.

Adie was pale looking but calm.

“I’m sorry if I’ve embarrassed you Tre but…my feelings have grown for you.” She said deciding that he’d finally have to know.

“Oh Adie,” said Tre.

“No. Don’t say anything, I fell for you and hoped you’d feel the same. I know now you don’t and I’ve ruined our friendship.” She said looking away from him.

“Of course you haven’t,” he said coming over to her, “Adie, you’ll always be my friend but no disrespect and you’re attractive and those bazookas of yours…they’re gorgeous,” he said.

“Tre,” said Billie, frowning.

“Well, they are but just…keep your clothes on in future,” he said.

They all laughed and Tre hugged Adie.

She still had strong feelings for him and she felt slightly awkward.

“Look, I’m going home. You two have lots to catch up on,” she said.

“I’ll take you back,” said Billie, “I can catch up with Tre tomorrow. Sorry dude, about the face,” he said pointing at Tre’s cheek.

“Don’t worry about it,” said Tre but concerned about Adie, why hadn’t he realised her feelings, stupid, stupid ass he was. Why? May be because he still thought of Sammi more than any other woman. That must be it.

When they got out of the car in which, once again they hadn’t spoken the entire journey Adie turned to Billie.

“I’m sorry you had to find out like that, I’ve got pretty close to Tre recently, he’s a good guy.”

“I know he is, but you and he? Adie, I couldn’t imagine it,” he said.

“Well I could,” said Adie.

“Come here Adie,” said Billie putting his arms out to her.

They hugged silently at their front door, nothing in it just a comforting hug.

**

Franky was just about to turn into Billie and Adie’s driveway when she saw them in the doorway with the light from their porch silhouetting them. They were hugging and Billie was gently stroking her back. Billie and Adrienne, together. Back together possibly. May be obviously.

She drove on past, they hadn’t seen her and she was quite pleased about that. They must be back together. Well she wouldn’t spoil it for him and by telling him that he could be a father again would definitely spoil it for them. So she just carried on driving, back home.

He needn’t know, she decided.
