God, Send Me an Angel
I need you.
"Excuse me," The same medic said to me and I stepped out the back of the van, holding onto the necklace in one hand and Diane's in the other. She kissed Cory's head before we were pointed into a room where we were told to wait.
As soon as the door was closed, Diane broke down. She sat on the couch and cried and cried and cried. She kept crying when the doctor came in and told us that they couldn't do anything to help Cory. She cried as we were lead into a room where he was, attached to machines and cords and IV drips. The rest of Cory's family was there, so I just went to wait outside, before his brother Luke pulled on my shirt.
"Please come in and say... say goodbye," He said, his eyes filling with tears. "Please. He's asking for you." I nodded and got up from the ground, walking into his room.
"No, wait, don't... go," I said as they all filed out of the room and closed the door. I sniffled, made my way over to Cory and sat down, rubbing my thumb on his hand back and forth. I heard something moved so I looked up at him to see him moving his head.
"Are you... okay?" He winced, opening his eyes to look at me. I bit my quivering lip and shook my head.
"My best friend is going to die. I'm never going to be okay anymore," I whispered.
"I'll still be here. Look after them." He groaned and squeezed my hand tighter.
"Are- are you okay?"
"It really hurts..."
"What does?" I panicked, looking to his body... Every part of him looked like it could have hurt.
"My chest," He groaned again. I watched silently as he took a couple of deep breaths before he looked like he was more peaceful. "Ash?"
"Yeah. I'm here."
"I love you Ash. You are the best thing that's happened to me. Really," He said when I shook my head and reached into my pocket. "No," He said as I went to give him back his necklace. "I told you to have it."
"But... I just... Cory, I don't want you to die," I whispered like a 5 year old.
"I don't want to either," He gasped, reaching at his side. "I'm sorry."
I nodded and sat down on the edge of the bed, rubbing his forearm. He smiled weakly at me, before grabbing my hand and closing his eyes. I hiccuped and let a tear slide down my cheek as I heard the heart rate monitor slowing down.
"No... Cory, stay. Please. I need you," I whispered, moving his hand. He opened his eyes weakly and took a deep breath.
"I love you Ash, I'll look out for you-"
"No!" I said loudly. "No, don't. Please."
"Don't let me die with you being angry at me," He threatened. Oh my God. He choses now to joke around. He's about to leave me forever and he's still trying to make the situation funny.
"I'm sorry," I said automatically, hugging him as gently as I could without hurting him.
"Love y-you kid," he gasped, his face contorted in pain.
"I love you too," I whispered, my voice cracking as I leant over to kiss him. I felt his lips catch mine and I pulled away maybe 2 seconds later, sniffling and looking at him.
"Thank you," He whispered, barely audible to me. I nodded and squeezed his hand.
"Your welcome," was what I said, but the sudden long, toneless, one beep over powered my hoarse voice.
I sat up, gasping for air. I looked around my dark room and tried to slow down my breathing. I pulled away the clammy blankets and made my way quietly downstairs to the front yard. I walked across the paving that separated my house from Cory's and sat in their tyre swing out the front. I swung silently, letting the tears rolled down my cheeks.
I couldn't do that speech thing that Lee wanted me to do. It was too hard. I can't talk about dad and Cory to a bunch of strangers. They won't understand.
No one would understand. But I couldn't try to make them, I just had to keep going. I looked up at the stars and smiled at the shapes and the glitter they looked like. I thought about dad. How much he loved the stars and stuff. Then I thought about Cory. Four words ran through my head. About both of them.
"I still love you."
