My Last Breath
My Last Breath
Melanie lay on the ground on a rough patch of grass. Her body limp and twisted after the single striking blow that racked her body. She had never felt so much pain and energy in a single hit before. It made her body feel numb to everything apart from pain in her chest and her mind go blank from thought.
The war between the hidden worlds had gone to a whole new level. The war that had raged on for hundreds of years was getting worse, to the point that everyone in the hidden world of vampires, witches and shape shifters was involved. Everyone. No one could escape it, not even the humans...
An ice cold silvery tear ran down Melanie face, twisting around her cheek and running into her soft back-blue hair. Her violet eyes stared up above her with a clouded vision. Nothing she saw was more then a blurred random colour. Not even the sky was clear.
Hold on to me love.
You know I can't stay long.
All I wanted to say,
Was I love you and I’m not afraid.
Justin ran as fast as he could between the creatures that were fighting. His heart thumped hard in his chest and ears. He had seen what happened to Mel just moments ago. She being the warrior that she was, she was fighting off an evil shape shifter when one of the dark vampires came up behind her and struck her in the back and chest. He watch horrified as it happened without being able to stop it as she collapsed to the ground.
Justin pushed himself as fast as he could go. He was running the fastest he had ever done in his life, but yet it still did seam to be quick enough. Time around him went in slow motion. As he finally reached her limp body it was like a switch being flicked. Everything went from slow motion to very fast. He dropped to his knees beside Melanie. Tear of his own threaten to fall.
“Mel!” He gasped.
Melanie heard her name and weakly turned her head to the side. She still couldn’t see much of what was happening around her, just one big moving blur. But she recognised the voice at once. Justin.
Can you hear me?
“Justin...” Mel whispered with her voice cracking like if she didn’t have enough air in her lungs.
Justin moved closer to her and lent over her wrapping his arms around her body. He had thought that she wasn’t alive after that blow. A small amount of relief rolled over him, but not much. She was still injured.
“Mel, are you ok?” He asked but mentally slapped himself.
Of course she’s not ok, he thought. Justin moved back and took a quick look over her. The only part of her he could tell was injured right at this moment was the little cut over Mel’s right eye. Justin moved once again and pulled Mel gently onto his lap. He took a quick glance around them, the fight had moved more over to the far north of where they sat.
Can you feel me in your arms?
Holding my last breath.
Melanie blinked a couple of time. She vision was slowly coming back; she could roughly see Justin’s face above her. His golden-brown hair and deep blue eyes stood out from the cloudy grey sky. Beautiful, was the only way she could describe it.
“Where does it hurt?” Justin asked looking over her again. “Are you hurt badly?”
“My chest.” She breathed.
That hit knocked the air cleanly out of her lungs. She heaved gasping for more air, but it felt like she couldn’t get enough in her lungs. She coughed dryly a couple of times before gasping again. Melanie looked up into Justin’s endless eyes... and almost got lost.
Justin and Melanie are Soul Partners; which nowadays it was rear with all the fighting that had been happening. But somehow they were able to find each other and have been joined at the hip ever since. Their love for each other was amazing and endless.
Safe inside myself.
Are all my thoughts of you?
Sweet raptured light it ends here tonight.
“I...love you.” Mel croaks out.
She felt that she had to tell him that. Neither had ever said those three words to each other before. Justin’s eyes suddenly sparkled and a smile pulled at his lips. He leaned forward and placed his lips to her forehead gently.
“I love you too Mel.” He said smoothly.
He kissed her forehead again and moved back to see her eyes. Her now clear eyes sparkled hearing those words from him and the slightest smile pulled at her lips.
But that small smile quickly faded. A sudden sharp pain shot through her chest making her wince and gasp in pain. It felt like fire in her chest. It took what breath she had away. Mel tried gasping for air again but her eyes slid shut.
I’ll miss the winter.
A world of fragile things.
Look for me in the white forest.
Hiding in a hollow tree.
Come find me.
All of a sudden everything was dark around Melanie, like if she was in a room with no door or windows. She span around trying to see something. Anything.
‘Melanie!’
Melanie had no idea where she was, but she could hear Justin’s frantic and worried voice. She tried to look around again. Where am I?
Mel turned around fully in the dark area she was in and out of nowhere light blinded her. Her arm threw up in front of her face to cover her eyes. It was so bright...and warm. After a long moment Mel slowly opened her eyes and moved her arm. She gasped at what she saw.
Snow. Trees covered in snow. She blinked amazed. How could I be here if I was just with Justin on the field? Mel then blinked again amazed. She knew this forest. It was the forest outside her town, just last winter.
“Come and catch me!”
Mel turned her head to see where the voice came from. Her mouth opened in shock. It was her. Melanie was seeing herself running into the forest laughing and smiling. Then out of nowhere Justin appeared running after her into the forest smiling.
I know you hear me.
I can taste it in your tears.
I remember this, Mel though. That was the day when they had both finish all their chores early and ran into the forest to play chasy. Mel had ended up at their hidden hollow tree hiding, sifting back her giggles as Justin got closer. She missed the days like that. When it was just her and Justin. Together.
[b]Holding my last breath.
Safe inside myself.
Are all my thoughts of you?
Sweet raptured light it ends here tonight. [b]
“Melanie, wake up!” Justin almost yelled.
He was becoming frantic, worried and scared. He wasn’t sure what to do...she just went limp in his arms, eyes shut. He didn’t want to lose her. He couldn’t lose her. She was pretty much his whole life. He loves her so much.
Grabbing Mel’s shoulders softly she gave her a little shake, just enough to wake a person in their sleep. Mel groaned in pain and her head rolled to the side. Justin’s heart thumped hard. Her eyes slowly flickered open. He knows why she passed out. She’s exhausted and weak. Her hazy eyes looking up at him.
Closing your eyes to disappear.
You pray your dreams will leave you here.
But still you wake and know the truth.
No ones there.
Justin let out a breath that he held in.
“Mel stay with me, you’ll be ok. I’ll get you somewhere safe soon.” He said looking into her eyes.
Justin then snapped his gaze from hers and looked around. He noticed sadly at the moment there was nowhere safe. They were in the middle of the field, south of the most fighting. If they moved right now, they could possibly be spotted. They would have to wait to either they move or this fight ended. So far it looks like the Light Warriors are winning.
“I feel...cold.” Mel whispered.
Justin looked down at her and noticed her shivering. Oh, no. He thought. She must be bleeding internally. No!
“Mel it’s going to be ok, just stay with me!” He said.
Moving Mel gently Justin held her close using his body heat to keep her warm. He knew it wouldn’t work for long. He needed to help her. Now.
Say goodnight.
Don’t be afraid.
Calling me,
Calling me as you fade to black.
Melanie noticed something was wrong. Not just by Justin’s voice. But she was getting colder and colder...and almost weaker. What did that vampire do to me...? Her thought trailed off. Panic and other emotions started filling her stomach. Was she dying? Is she really that hurt? How could her and Justin get to a safe place...?
I need help, quickly, she realised.
Say goodnight.
Holding my last breath.
Don’t be afraid.
Safe inside myself.
Calling me.
Are all my thoughts of you?
Sweet raptured light it ends here tonight.
Justin looked around franticly again while racking his brain for ways to help his love. What could he do? He was just a witch. He hadn’t learnt healing spells well yet; nothing that could help Mel in her current state. He bit his lips hard. He could try. Right?
Say goodnight.
Don’t be afraid.
Calling me.
Calling me as you fade to black.
Justin looked down at Melanie chewing his lip. He had never tried to heal anyone one but his Dad who was teaching him the spells. He had deficiently not tried to heal a shape shifter like Mel. Before the blow she didn’t have time to change into a cheater.
Mel’s eyes suddenly started drooping again. No!
“Melanie stay with me.” He said strongly. “I’m going to try and heal you.”
Justin moved Mel so she was flat on the ground. He moved around to the top of her head. He placed his hand on either side of her face and took a deep breath. He had to try his best. He had to keep Melanie alive.
Holding my last breath.
All of a sudden a white glow formed around Justin. He put all his power behind his magic. By how Mel looked he had only once chance. One chance to make this right. One chance to save her.
“I love you Melanie.” He whispered as her eyes fully closed.
A sudden white light filled the area around them. It was bright, warm and...Almost loving. It swirled around them like some type of mist and light. It danced in circles, twisting and turning until suddenly it started to fade. Just like mist.
As fast as it came it disappeared. The area that Mel and Justin were in was now clear. Justin was now lying on his side next to Mel breathing heavily looking at her. He had no idea if it worked. He hoped it did. He hoped he wasn’t too late.
Mel’s eyes begin to flicker open and she breathed in deeply like she had been holding her breath. Justin quickly sat up beside her. Melanie looked to him and a slight smiled pulled at her lips. She felt only the slightest bit of pain in her chest. Nothing compared to what she did feel.
Justin jumped forward and pulled her in a tight hug almost on the verge to crying. She was ok, she was ok. He repeated in his head.
“Your ok.” He breathed.
“I told you one day you’ll be good at magic.” She smiled hugging him back. “Thank you.”
“Anything for you.” He whispered in her ear.
Justin pulled back just enough to place his lips on hers. She smiled and kissed him back. She was so happy to be alive and in her arms. Nothing was more important to her than being with him.
No matter which was the war went, as long as they were together.
