On The Other Side Of The Tracks
Chapter One

"Please, Taylor just take her to the concert." My mother pleaded at me for the tenth time this morning. I hadn’t even sat down to have my breakfast before she was asking favors.
"But Mom," I whined. I only whined when I absolutely had to. I always thought it was super annoying when my little sister, Brianna whined. "I was going to go riding after school."
"You can ride anytime. Your sister really wants to go to Hannah Montana. She’s only in town for one day." She replies.
I cross my arm over my white camisole pajama top. "No."
"Please please please please!!" my Mom pleads putting her hands together.
I roll my eyes at her. Then gave in. "Fine. But you so owe me."
"Yes! Thank you!" she replies and hugs me.
I shrug her off and stalk out of the kitchen.
"You can still go riding but just for a bit. I’m sure Ariana won’t mind if you miss one ride."
I smile and nod at her.
The thing was I never ride with Ariana. She was the most horrible person in the world. I made that up to hide who I was really riding with. Yeah, sure I was riding with all my other best friends from school but I couldn’t tell my mom the truth. She wouldn’t understand. She would just make fun of me.
I was really riding with the person who owned the horse stall next to me.
Erin.
I can’t help but smile when I bring him up in a conversation. It would throw my Mother off no matter what I told her.
He’s the same age as me, sixteen, and goes to the private school down the road from my public. He’s so sweet and nice. And he loves animals. Just like me! All my friends adore him. If only he would ask me out.
I’ve been working on a plan all month. But my plans never work. I only get to see him for a couple of hours after school. But I can’t always go to the stable. So it’s hard to see him. I will never ever give up a chance to see him, until now...
We always take the long trail on Fridays because we can worry about homework later on. The rest of the week we just take the small ones.
I turn around and walk back out of the kitchen. To my room to get ready for school. I open my closet doors and look at my options.
Hmmm…
I flipped through the t-shirts and long sleeves till I found what I was looking for.
I finally decided a long sleeve shirt with yellow and white large stripes and a high neck line. My favorite dark wash jean shorts and black ankle fringe boots.
I smiled at myself in the mirror and walked over to my make-up/hair desk. I groaned when I saw my hair in the mirror as I sat down. My usual brown glossy curls was now a bees nest on the top of my head.
I laughed combed it out. I applied my favorite ‘Hard Candy’ Clear Lip-gloss, blue eye liner and eye shadow.
I grabbed my books and my purse before heading out of my room.
I walked out my front door and waved to my mom who was pulling out of the driveway on her way to work.
I walked down the street to the bus stop and waited. Luckily I was the only one who took the bus on my street. Which left me alone with my thoughts. This was a good thing on days like these.
How can Mom just do that?
Can’t Brianna go by herself. She’s ten not three.
What will Erin think when he finds out I won’t go on the long trail.
Will he go without me?
Think I’m leaving him for a hot date?
I laughed and shook my head.
Looking down the road I saw the big yellow bus coming my way.
I smiled when the bus stopped and the doors opened.
"Hey Maggie." I say to the bus lady as I climb on.
"Hey Taylor. How are you this morning?" she asks closing the bus door when I get on.
"Great thank you." I say and move down the aisle of the bus.
Along the way I get a bunch of ‘Hey Taylor’s and ‘Whats up Tay’s before I reach my regular seat near the back.
As usual my bestfriend, Nikki, had her nose in a book. Even when I sat down she never looked up until I talked to her.
Her outfit was total ‘Nikki’ original. A white T-shirt, a sleeveless leather jacket, denim mini, a loose thin tie, big earrings and a big black studded purse in the seat next to her. Her blonde hair was shiny and loose around her shoulders.
"Hey Nik." I say and snap my fingers in front of her face.
She looks up and sees me. "Oh sorry." She blushes. "This book is really good. I’m just at the big romantic reunion part."
I laughed and let her finish her book.
Meanwhile I looked around the people on the bus. The usual suspects were on board.
The nerdy kids up at the front with their faces in their studying. Or comparing which computer software was the best right now.
The ‘normals’ right behind them. Their usually listening to their Ipods, studying, doing the homework they forgot to do or just talking to each other.
Then the cute skater boys. Their usually comparing their boards and talking about when to go to the skate park next.
Then there was the kind of ‘Goth’ as you would call them next to the skaters. Nobody usually talks to them. The black lipstick and eyeliner usually throws people off. They usually just stare into space on the bus.
The peppy cheerleaders are next and they sit in front of us. The never seem to take off their uniforms. Nobody has actually had the guts to ask them why they don’t. They usually practicing cheers and stuff that has to do with cheerleading.
Then there was me and my crowd. We’re I guess what you call popular. Or as some people call us the snobby rich girls from the upper crust. Yeah sure we live in big mansions on estates and shop at the best stores but we’re just people. Mostly people say that because they want to be us. Or just down right hate us.
"Okay done. Sorry again." Nikki says putting her book into her purse.
"No problem. I know not to disturb a good book." I say and smile.
"Thanks, so how was your morning?" she asks.
"Terrible. My mom wants me to take Brianna to a Hannah Montana concert." I reply and roll my eyes.
"Wait is this the same woman who thinks your still best friends with Ariana?"
OH I forgot to mention one important detail of my group. Ariana is the co-alpha of it. We were best friends in grade school. Ever since we got to high school and I became the ‘queen bee’ of the popular people she’s hated me. Just stopped talking to me, found new friends and tried to over throw me. I too found new friends and fought right back. It’s been a nonstop battle since 8th grade. My mom loved Ariana so much I didn’t have the heart to tell her we weren’t friends anymore.
"So are you going to take her?" Nikki asks.
"I have to. Or else no more riding." I lower my voice. "And I can’t see Erin any other way." I smile.
Nikki is the only living breathing person who knows about Erin. She’s the person I can go to for advice or tell a secret to.
Nikki giggles at my remark.
"It’s not funny." I say and smile.
"I’ve never seen you so obsessed with guy since Mark in fifth grade."
"Hey! We made an oath never to talk about him." I demand.
"Opps sorry." Nikki says and giggles again.
"Yeah so anyway is the concert after school?"
I nod.
"So your going to miss the long trail then?"
I nod again.
"That’s so unfair. Fridays are the only real time you get to spend with Erin and now it’s all going to be ruined by one person. He’s going to think your blowing him off or something." Nikki blurts out all at once.
"Wow Nik take a breath. And that’s how I feel. You basically just broke it down." I say and pat her on the back.
Nikki laughs and the bus lurches to a stop sending us both head first into the seat in front of us.
"Owwww." We both say and giggle as we hold our foreheads.
The person in front of us gets mad and turns around to face us.
"Whats your problem you-" Ariana says while turning around then stops when she sees who she’s insulting. "Oh hi Taylor, Nikki. Can you watch where you put those empty things you call your heads. You nearly made me mess up on my make-up."
I roll my eyes. "And that would just ruin our day," I say putting my hand to my mouth and gasping. "Seriously though Ariana why do you put your make-up on now? On a bus?"
"It’s just easier okay?" she says and gets up from her seat and stalks off the bus.
I look out the side window and see that were here already.
I get up and grab my purse off the seat and head down the now empty aisle of the bus.
With Nikki right behind me we step off the bus and on home turf.
The place I like to sometimes call home.
I breath the fresh smell of newly cut grass and smile. The big brick building welcoming us with open arms. The windows newly washed and shiny glistening in the sun. The flag proudly blowing in the wind.
I laughed and grabbed Nikki’s arm and tugged her toward the school.
