Boned: A Forensic Fairytale

A Princess in a Lab Coat

Chapter Four: Golden Thread.

“Fuck!” He shouted again. “Fuck!” I have to get there to check this out. Dammit. He had been pacing for an hour in his living room. His mind wrapping around the dream he had, had. “Dammit.” It wasn't blood...it was pie filling. He raced to his kitchen table in the dining room, his pajama's swishing in the breeze he made as he ran. He picked up his phone. His mind still racing, his fingers flying over the numbers. The line rang three times, shortly a man's voice came on the line.
“Hello? Thank you for calling Lenny and Venny Chauffeur Services. How can I help you today?” The man asked, a rich Brooklyn accent tinting his tone.
“I need a cab!” Jasper blurted out. His heart pounding within his chest.
“Pal, we are not cab drivers. We are chauffeurs.”
“Whatever you call it, your still taking people around for money. You basically cabs with class.” Jasper retorted. He didn't have time to get in a Bronx brawl with some New Yorker who didn't know what to call himself.
“Cabs with class, eh? Yeah. I like that. I think I will use that as our next chain of business. Thanks kid. You know what. I will send someone out there for free. Whats the address?”
“17 North Gale. Apartment 19.” Jasper replied. “Thank you.”
“Not to worry, someone will be there in ten.” Jasper went to respond but the line clicked.

10 minutes is all it took. Wow. Jasper thought to himself. Lenny...or Venny was right. The glossy black sedan honked once. Jasper quickly pulled out the red evidence bag and grabbed his new badge from the table drawer and rushed outside. He heard a loud click as he approached the car. He reached for the door and opened it, sliding into the back of the car.
“I need to get to the Willardson Forensic Lab on 16th and Main.” Jasper ordered as the driver already began to drive away.
“You got it mister.” The dark mocha skinned man said. His Jamaican accent new to Jasper's ears.
“And make it fast.” Jasper ordered, he swore he saw the man smile.

The large circle drive wrapping around the Willardson Forensic Lab was only a blur as the driver drifted around it. Jasper climbed out of the car, his legs and and arms weak from the torture they had just been through. He had lost count on the red lights they ran after 10. He felt sick. He was never going to tell anyone to “Make it fast.” again. After he could feel his feet he rushed inside, his eyes dancing among the doors until he found the one he was looking for 'Toxicology and Ballistics.' he entered the room. His eyes catching sight of the wiry headed woman with her eyes clued to a microscope. He shut the door behind him, a loud click as the door returned to its original position, caused the woman to jump.
“Oh...c-can I h-help you?” She asked, stuttering. Her hands fighting for control over the wobbling microscope.
“Yes. I am Agent Jasper Barron. I am also the medical examiner at the county morgue. I-” He began. Her eyes fixated on him caused him to stop mid sentence.
“Ah, so your the one Finn was talking about?” She asked.
“Rachael?”
“Oh, I see you don't call her by her nickname. Any way! What can I do for you, Agent?” She asked, her large green eyes glowing with anticipation. “My name is Sarah by the way. Sarah Crimes. I hear your the M.E that solved my brothers murder.” she spoke. A slight melancholy smile filling her features
“Wait! You are Lyndon Crimes' sister?” Jasper asked, transferring his tone from excitement to remorse.
“Yep! One of two. He has two brothers also.” She responded. Jasper couldn't understand her. Her brother had been killed and she was a bouncy as they come.
“Um, Sarah? Can I ask you something? Why are you not hurt over it? I mean, your brother was brutally murdered.” Jasper asked, again his mind keeping hold on his tongue.
“Look, Agent Barron. It has almost been 4 years on Sunday, and sure I miss Lyndon every day, a lot more than I let off, but I have a way with copping. You see Lyndon was the science buff, the one in are Mormon family that wanted to be in forensics, I wanted to be a vet and have the perfect man and live happy ever after.” she answered laughing. “but I decided after he died to take on his dream. I was going to be the squint, the nerd, the one who everyone looked at funny. I think it keeps him alive in my heart. Because for every case I am apart of. It is one more that Lyndon is also. I know you think I am crazy but it helps.” Jasper just looked at her. His mind wrapping around it. It wasn't crazy. Until now he finally saw someone that he could look at and see some of himself.
“No! Actually I think that is one of the most help ful things anyone has ever said to me. I always wanted to be in forensics, but I wanted to be a CSI. And after my mother was killed and it triggered something. I knew then that I had to be an investigator. I had to solve all the cases I could. Because no one could solve hers.” Jasper said, his voice cracking. He could feel the tears pushing against his eyes. He closed them fast. To hell if someone was going to see him cry. Not now, not ever. No one had seen him cry since his mother's funeral. “Anyway. I need your help.
“Your wish is my command. Agent.” She said smiling.

Jasper walked over to the microscope with her. He began to fill her in. Explaining the request as well as the dream.

“So, you want me to look at blood, which you think is cherry pie filling, because of a dream?” Sarah asked. Sarcasm filling the confides of her voice.
“No, I know this isn't blood. I know it is pie filling. I just...know.” Jasper shot. He hated being doubted. Hated it with a passion.
“Okay, okay. Fine. I can have the results in 30 minutes. Is that okay with you?” Sarah asked. Though it was more of a statement than a question, if Jasper wanted to know for sure he would have to wait. Jasper nodded.

The dim lobby outside of Sarah's lab was eery. Jasper had offered to stay with her, but the remembrance of how he disliked people hovering over him made him think differently. He glanced at the clock ticking above him. Dammit! It is 45 minutes passed. Where in the hell is she? He stammered in his mind. He shot up quickly pacing back into the Toxicology room. His eyes traced the room before he entered. He focused on the strawberry blond woman who once again had her eyes glued to the lens of a microscope. His vision also finding the very tan man with chocolate brown hair hovering over her. His arm outstretched above her, resting palm side on the wall. Once again neither of them heard him shut the door. He walked to the right placing himself behind the two.

Sarah, this is crazy!” The man began. “How did he know what it was? The continuity was intact. He couldn't have staged it!”
“I know Tanner, I know. I don't know how he did it, but he did. All he said is that he had a dream.” Sarah responded to the man now known as Tanner. “I better go get him.” She stated as she exited her chair to leave. Jasper coughed as she got to the door, signaling his presence. Sarah jumped, as she had done earlier. “Dammit!” She screamed “Oh, umm. How long have you been there?”
“Long enough.” Jasper answered flatly. He laughed as her face quickly changed to the color of her undershirt underneath her lab coat.
“Oh, well...” She began. Her face still that same crimson color. “Than you know by what you heard that what we found the substance to be is in fact...pie filling.”
“Cherry pie filling to be exact.” The man interjected. “And I don't know how you knew. Oh, I haven't introduced myself. I am Tanner, Tanner Castes. I am the Ballistics examiner here. Best in the county but I don't like to boast.” Jasper reached out his hand to shake hands.
“Well, I need to be getting back before 12 or Rach will have my ass. Thank you. I need you to keep that on file.” Jasper ordered.
“Will do, buckaroo.” Sarah said in a singsong voice. With that Jasper nodded to them both and left.

“How long do you think he was there?” Tanner asked Sarah.
“Not that long. At least...i don't think so.” Sarah responded.
“Well I am guessing he didn't see this,” Tanner said, leaning down gently laying his lips against hers, letting her deepen the moment. Sarah complied. Her lips pressing back, gently but not timid. Tanner grinned as she began nipping at his bottom lip. The two remained locked for moments. Moments that to them seemed like hours. Finally Tanner broke the kiss. “I will see you tonight at La Dava, right?”
“Me...skip French food....your crazy!” She stated again in the same singsong voice. Tanner smiled.
“Okay well I have to go and get the files from Morrison. I will be back by 2. Love you.” Tanner lay one more kiss upon her lips before leaving Sarah alone in the lab.

“How is it that he can make me feel like a princess in a lab coat?” She said to no one.
