Looking for Angels
Two
I brought my knees underneath my chin and rested my head there while staring from the rooftop of the tall building I sat upon. The sky had grown dark, causing all the people to switch on the lights in the city. I stared below, watching people hurry along in the streets, knowing the day was turning into night with the fact that it wasn't safe in the blackness.
I sighed and took close notice in an apartment building in front of me. The only thing that perked my interest was the black wings that I watched from behind. The fallen member moved and showed an older lady with a pill bottle in her hands. Why don't they value their lives? Why throw it away for nothing?
Her hand shook as she put the mouth of the bottle to her lips. She leaned her head back and emptied the contents of the bottle. I watched as the fallen angel moved so quickly to latch his fangs onto her neck, draining her of her blood. She fell back onto the bed and stared up at the ceiling lifeless.
A transparent form of her stood beside the boy, asking what they all asked. Where am I going? What's it like? She looked up at me and pointed and the boy turned around and held my gaze for the longest time. I froze, holding my breath. He smirked. His dark hair was spiked up in the back while his bangs hang over his left eye. He wore only black jeans with converse and remained shirtless. I stared at his chest and marveled at the six pack there. I took in the detail of the lines leading down into the waist of his jeans. But what held me the most was his beautiful blue eyes.
Without breaking our stare, his hand shot out the plasma ball that stretched into that oval circle. I noted that the color of the portal wasn't rainbow colors like mine. It was a black color. He nodded at something the woman said. Most likely, "Is this where I go through at?" What they all say. Then she stepped forward and the ball closed up into a straight line, then a small little cross, and floated up into the air. I wanted to watch where it was going but I just couldn't break my gaze. I knew where it was going though. Up in the sky to become a star. He jumped out of the window and spread out his wings and then landed right beside of me in a sitting position.
"Well, I've never seen you around before or I would've noted your beauty. Your a newbie aren't you?" he asked, still holding my complete attention.
"Um, thanks." I murmured, trying to restrain myself from his eyes but I couldn't. It seemed like he had control over me.
"Hardly run into others like myself, so a little chit chat wouldn't hurt." he said with a shrug. "So, why they cast you out of their perfect little city?"
"Apparently I murdered someone."
"You look a little young to kill someone, what are you, like seventeen?"
"Sixteen, the stopping age for born angels in heaven."
"How long you been sixteen?"
"A hundred and three." I muttered.
"Ha, I'm seventeen, my dying age. Been like this for, eh a hundred and seven years?" He laughed but then silence grew over us. A few moments passed as I began to watch cars on the street below, no longer under his hold. "So, you 'apparently' murdered someone, what's that about?"
"I didn't do it." I said, laying back staring at the stars.
"You didn't do it, that's what most of the criminals here on Earth say and most up there too."
"But I didn't do it. Somebody did it and took off. I just happened to stumble upon it and I tried to help by healing them but it was too late. Then, my hands were covered in evidence. I took the fall for someones mistake."
"Oh, I bet that has to suck. To be ripped away from your family and friends."
"Your not helping," I muttered, turning my head to glare at him. "What did you do? Are you innocent of it or actually guilty."
"I rather acquire your name. Your interesting to me."
"Thanks? I think."
He laughed and shook his head. "Yeah, it was meant as a compliment."
"My name's Ashlynn."
"Ah, well Ash, I have to go, duty calls."
Without another word he jumped up and flashed me a smile and flung himself over the roof. A few seconds passed and he rose high into the sky and towards the east side of the city. I watched him disappear into the nights sky. I felt that familiar pull and sighed. I guess it was perfect timing.
I got up and fell backwards off the building. I landed on the street and started to walk. I guess the person was really close since I wasn't flying. I stopped in front of a large building and raised my eyebrows. This is one of the most popular places in the city. The big theater for Broadway shows, other musical performances, and plays. Every event that took place here, all the chairs were always filled. Not one of the thousand seats were empty.
I walked into the building and into the lobby, taking note that the ticket booth was closed but so were the doors to the stage area. My guess was that they were in session of some performance. I walked through the doors, seeing that every seat was filled, and couldn't believe that a person was going to kill themselves in front of a thousand people.
I found myself walking onto the stage just as performers were exiting for the next set which caused the curtains to drop and the crowd to clap obnoxiously. I looked up finding my victim on the small narrow bridge that was used to drop and lift backgrounds and the curtains, along with special effects to the show.
Her purple black aura wasn't hard to miss. It wrapped around her and kept growing bigger telling me she was near her actions that would lead her to her death. I lifted myself into the air and landed gently on the metal bridge. She was making sure a rope was tied tightly against a pole. Satisfied she turned and got the end of the rope off the floor, wrapping it around her neck, and stood up. She froze upon seeing me standing there with my arms crossed across my chest.
"What are you doing up here, no crazy fan girls," she said, gesturing to my clothing.
"Oh, me, a fan girl." I laughed. "No honey, I'm here to deliver your soul to the other side when you throw yourself of this ledge here."
"Why would you think I would do that. I'm an actress, I'm not going to throw my life away."
"Apparently you are, or I wouldn't be standing here wasting my time."
"No, your wasting my time," she growled, slowly edging herself over to the edge. She looked over, looking at the performers below play their part. Then, she looked back up at me.
"Before you fling yourself over and fall to your death, tell me why your doing this."
"I don't have to tell you. You'll just go to the reporters and start rumors."
"Look lady, I'm not what you think I am." with that I lifted myself up into the air and watched her face pale. Shock froze onto her face as I lowered myself down to the ledge and resumed standing with my arms crossed.
"What are you," she stuttered.
"I am your death, here to deliver your soul. Now answer my question. I'm curious why you humans continuously do this."
"Life as an performer isn't easy. Everyone thinks it is but its not. You have no control of your life once your signed away to a contract. You can't eat what you want, can't do anything you want, can't wear what you want to, can't shit or piss when you want, can't do anything. Let alone love who you want. I'm about to be married to one of my dad's best friend's son. What better way to escape from this hell by death."
"Seems reasonable, but you could have it worse like the rest. Why can't you humans work out your problems instead of taking away something you're only going to have once. Why throw it away over nothing. It's pointless."
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"Oh, but that's where you're wrong. I do, in fact, know what I'm talking about. Think about the people who love you, think of how disappointed they will be when they find out you pull this stunt. All your fans fading away because of this mistake. Your friends who don't claim they knew you. Is it really worth it? Losing everyones respect for you. Losing everyone you love. How would you feel if someone you knew went through with what your about to do?"
She stared at me, her eyes watering with tears. "I would feel everything you just said," she whispered, shaking with sobs. "But I'd understand if they saw it was the only way out."
I shook my head. Humans were so stubborn and refused to reason. I watched her stick her foot off over the edge. I turned my head and shut my eyes, not wanting to watch more people die. I waited to hear screams erupt from the crowd as they saw her hang from the rope in the air over the stage. I waited, but heard nothing. I looked over my shoulder and saw her staring below. Both of her feet were planted to the floor. She looked up at me with tears covering her face.
"Why couldn't you leave me be! Why couldn't you just let me go through with my own decision! Just once in my life I wanted control! I wanted this and you manipulated me!"
"I couldn't leave you be because I can't understand why you people just throw your life away while some don't even have experience of being a human."
"Your an angel, you were human once before."
"No, that's where you're wrong. I was born an angel. I always envied your kinds genius mind until I found out how stupid you people really are when you let a little bump of a problem in your life make you want to kill yourself just because you can't solve it or you're to lazy to at least attempt an effort of fixing it." I paused. "Those types don't deserve to have a life. Especially a pampered princess like you."
I jumped off the edge and fell towards the stage until I extended my wings out, stopping me halfway. I flapped my wings and rose above her as she stared up at me. Her lips barely moved but I understood what she said. Two words of courtesy. Thank you. I nodded and flew up through the ceiling and landed on the roof.
I swallowed and ignored the burn in the back of my throat. My only suicidal human today and she didn't even kill herself. "did you not feed today?" came that familiar voice.
I turned around and saw that amazingly hot guy behind me. "What makes you assume that?"
"Your wings aren't your dark purple color. They're in fact a very bright purple."
"Oh, well, no." I paused, remembering his portals color. "Hey, why was you portal black?"
His face sorta paled and fear showed in his eyes but only for a few seconds. He recovered and smiled. "Because, I've been a fallen longer than you."
Something made me feel like he was lying. I couldn't prove that he was so I shrugged it off. "So, I never got your name earlier."
"It's Blake."
"So, when does my portal turn black?"
He didn't reply. Instead he smiled slightly. "It seems every time our conversation gets interesting, I have to leave for our duty."
"Oh, right. Well, duty does call." I muttered, shrugging.
"See ya around."
I sat down and stared below. He's trying to hide something. I just wonder what it could be?
