Living While Dead
chapter 5: first day of school
I woke up extra early so that I could look my best for my first day of school. Aeron woke up a half hour after me. We took turns in the bathroom, and after an hour and a half of preparing myself for school, we were off. Aeron and Toby walked with me to the bus stop that was down the street. We got on the bus as the driver looked strangely at my clothes, I smiled, then proceeded to the back of the bus. Aeron and Toby came back and sat with me. Aeron and I talked, but Toby was very quite around me. I turned to him and said, “are you always this shy Toby?” he didn’t answer. I looked at Aeron and shrugged. So did Aeron. Something strange was going on with Toby, but we didn’t know what. The bus came to a sudden halt. It was the school stop. I followed Aeron and Toby out of the bus and we walked up to the school. It was a huge academy, with at least three floors of classrooms. I took a deep breath and Aeron pulled me in the door. He told me where the principals office was,and said goodbye. I went to the front desk and asked to speak with Mr. Wilcin. The receptionist lead me into his office and he told me where all my classes were, how to get them, and he mostly stressed about how I need to stay out of trouble. I just agreed with everything he said. He showed me to my first class and said goodbye. I knocked on the door and the teacher waved for me to come in.
“this is the new foreign exchange student, Amelia. Im Mrs. Kinslings. You may take a seat next to Dean over there.” She pointed to a boy with longish hair and blue eyes. He smiled at me as I sat down. He held his hand out and said, “hi im Dean Alisten.”
I shook his hand and replied, “Amelia Penting.”I had to lie about my last name in case if someone recognized it. He smiled back, then we both started to listen to the lesson. After class, Dean helped me find my new class, which I also had with him. It was social studies, my favorite class! The teacher asked me to introduce myself so I did, and she also made everyone else say hello. In the middle of the class, she asked me what Obama’s new intentions were to help make the United States a green country. Being out of the loop of news and presidency, I had absolutely no clue what she meant by a ‘green’ country. Or who this Obama guy was! I simply said, “being new to this country, I have no idea!” she laughed and asked Dean who knew the exact answer. I walked past Aeron after class, he introduced me to one of his friends Alyssa. She was quite fond of him! I left them alone and went to my next class.The next class was Phys. Ed. I just went along with everything they did. We played volleyball. I caught on very quickly. The teacher actually recommended that I try out for the team! I noticed when we were playing that I had this class with Kelly. My worst nightmare. She would look at me than whisper to her friends. I would get distracted from the game and miss the ball. We switched teams after a while. Kelly was one of the team captians. She picked me! Of all people! She and I were in the front next to eachother. I jumped for the ball when Kelly plowed me to the floor! I fell on my wrist and I heard a snap. The teacher yelled at Kelly then had the nurse come and get me. She wrapped an ace bandage around my wrist, then walked me to class, carrying my books for me. I thanked her, then went into my next class. The teacher told me to sit and he continued the lesson.
This class was language arts. The teacher was telling us to write about an important person that lived during the 1920’s. she assigned everyone to a person. I had to white about Josephine Baker. One kid In the back of the classroom got an even more important person to me….me!
