Draconis Aeternitis

Chapter 1

There was no beginning and there will be no end. Yet for countless eternities there was no life, only the vast expanse of space, littered with stars, planets, and clouds of interstellar gas. For all the empty space, stretching into aeons and back, there was only one entity, neither living nor dead, male nor female, that traversed the universe alone, keeping the cosmos in order and at the same time causing chaos. It was the be all and end all, It was the one, It had existed since time immemorial. It was as old as the universe itself yet as young as a newborn infant, for at this time, time did not exist. It was the Universal Dragon. Yet for the countless eternities the Universal One had existed, for the numerous times It had been to the edge of existence and back, the Universal One had grown tired and discontent. The universe held no more wonders, for It had seen everything. So the Universal Dragon did something never down before. With a swipe of it's claws It gathered up a great handful of stars and clouds, and infusing them with It's essence created another entity, a dragon to govern order. Knowing there cannot be be without the other the Universal One created another dragon to govern chaos.

Thay came into existence as if they always existed, as ancient as the universe and filled with the knowledge of aeons. And yet even after countless eternities, they, too, grew discontent. Remember, at this time the universe was still as of yet empty. Life did not exist. So, as one, the trio of eternal dragons did something that to this day shakes the very foundation of reality. They created the first mortal creature. And as it took its first breath int he cold vacuum of space, the first breath ever to be drawn in the countless eternities that the universe had existed, it shuddered, and with nary a sound, died. It lay a lifeless heap int he Universal Ones hands, its dull eyes reflecting eternity. The Universal Ones eyes sparked fiercely, and thus began the time of creation. For a few millenia the great dragons worked, bringing life to lifeless planets and seeding the cosmos with creation. During this time new dragons came in existence, dragons to govern new roles that had appeared with the onset of life.

One dragon was lithe and graceful, her interdimensional wings at times resembling a great tree rife with singing birds. She was charged with life itself, her purpose being to create new form of life, to bring the child to the parent, to keep species thriving. She manifested in rivers flowing with fish, in skies teeming with organic creatures, and in the very being of every one of her creations. She was the spark that brought fluid movement to otherwise lifeless lumps, and every one of her creations was her child. She was part of her children and her children were part of her, and in her presence her children sang with joy, their lives simple and content. But there has to be balance, there cannot be one without the other, and at the moment the dragon of life came into existence so did the dragon of death.

He soared on wings of darkness, his deepset eyes a window into eternity. He was charged with the task of ending lives, of bringing souls back to the void from which they came. The creatures feared him and the time he would come, and in his presence let out mournful howls and moans. He was the dark to life's light, the entity that snuffed out the spark and brought it back to the void. He manifested in places of death and in the cold night air, yet he wasn't evil. He merely did what had to be done by keeping populations in check and ending suffering. Together he and his sister took charge over the mortal world, and for a while, all was at peace.

Among infinite worlds species thrived and changed. Ecosystems grew and mortals evolved, forming predator and prey, plant and animal. At this time the universe was all about instinct, the five Great Ones lording over and keeping everything in check. But in time new creatures evolved, creatures the dragons had never encountered before. They belonged to all kinds of species, yet had the same things in common. They would think, they would make decisions, and they would look up at the sky at night and question their existence. The Great Ones had never seen this before, and naturally were curious. They had never questioned their existence, they always were and always would be. As these strange deviations grew and learned they built shrines and altars to the Great Ones, in hopes of learning why. This single question drove all their actions, that single word: why? Why were they created? Why did they exist? And, most importantly, what was their reason for being?

During this time the Great Ones held back and observed. What would these mortals do? And as they watched more new dragons came into being. The original five Great Ones hadn't created them, they simply came to, as if they always existed but hadn't a a purpose, until now. There were dragons for joy and for fear, for jealousy and revenge. They were known as the Eon Dragons and they governed all aspects of the sentient ones lives, ranging from sorrow to rage and everything inbetween. Yet the Great Ones didn't see any threat in the emergence of the Eons. They were doing their jobs, instilling fear and envy into those who needed it and refraining from interference with the five Great Ones. Once again, all was peaceful for a few millenia.

During this time the sentient ones created machines and ventured into space, feuled by that one question: why. Along with the Eon dragons there were now also minor dragons, entities tasked with minor things, such as the colouration of certain species and which way something would fall. Once again the five Great Ones paid them no heed, they were simply happy there were dragons to govern all the small details. But while they lorded over the cosmos they were unaware of the gathering storm. Some of the minor and Eon dragins felt somehow cheated, as if they were destined for far greater things then their meager posts. They began to question why the Universal One was the one that was that held all the power, and speculated that It had been most powerful for far too long. In the minds of these corrupted dragons the Universal One had grown old and lazy, and neglected the dragons at the bottom. Not all the minor and Eon dragons thought this way and tried to sway the corrupted ones plans, but to no avail.

Their minds set, the discontent dragons swarmed the Universal One in an attempt to wrest away It's power. Furious and outraged that It's fellow dragons would attack it so, and sad that they viewed power as such an important thing, the Universal One swiped them with its great claws, and reaching into their essence took their immortality. Now mortal, the dragons slunk away to various planets to live out the rest of their lives until the dragon of death came for them. Millenia passed, at which time the descendants of the corrupted ones, the mortal dragons of medieval times, had all but forgotten their past. Much of it by this time was the stuff of legends, but the yearning still remained, the desire to once again be a great Eon Dragon. Along with the yearning there was also a great rage at the Universal One for denying them their rightful place, and everytime a dragon gazed up at the starry night sky, they were reminded of their past, and all live to attain their place among the Gods once more.
