Maybe In Another Life

Maybe in Another Life(Chapter 1/1)

Her long brown hair flowed behind her as she walked through the Hidden Leaf Village. She was glad she was born there. If she wasn't she would have met most of her friends. Out of all her friends she was glad she met Shikamaru Nara the most. It was because of him that she learned how to relax. She started to remember to back when they were about ten.

She was in a clearing in the forest that surrounded the village. The trees were fairly close to each other so almost everyone aside from the animals didn't know about it. She was working and working on her jutsu which she couldn't get right. She kept getting the hand signs messed up and was getting angry with herself. She kept trying without taking a break. Eventually a boy around her age came into the clearing. She stopped for a moment to see who had come. The boy had brown hair pulled back into a spikey ponytail, he had his hands in his pockets, and she reconized him from the ninja academy. He was Shikamaru Nara. They knew each others names, but that was about it.

"Chihiro, what are you doing?" Shikamaru asked.

"I'm training." Chihiro simply replied.

"Why? Training is a drag." He said. She was confused by why he even cared why since he thought of everything as drag.

"Not that you probably care, but I have to train just a little harder than everyone else in class. That's only because I'm not very good at making hand signs." She admitted. He could tell that she was a little uptight.

"You need to relax." Shikamaru layed himself down in the grass. She didn't know how he could be so chilled out all the time.

"You always skip or sleep during class. Why should I listen to you?" Chihiro asked. He shugged his shoulders and said, "I don't think getting angrier is going to make you better though."

After messing up from a few more tries she decided to do the same as him. She didn't get what they were staring at though. She finally asked, "What are we staring at?"

"The clouds." Shikamaru said. She watched them go by and felt her mind empty out. Chihiro felt calm, then decided to continue her training. When she tried again she finally got it right. She smiled to herself and thought, 'He was right. I can't believe it, but maybe he is smarter than he seems.'

"Thanks. Your advice worked." Chihiro said to Shikamaru. He shrugged his shoulders and he left.
That was just the start of their friendship.

It has been fourteen years since that day. Chihiro kept in touch when they could, but their paths in life made that hard. They were still the best of friends. She was hoping that he was home. She walked to his house. She went up to the door and knocked loudly so if he was home he would hear it. She waited for several moments and decided to leave.

When she turned around she bumped into someone. It was a man with brown hair with a spikey brown ponytail.

"Hi, Shikamaru! How have you been?" Chihiro asked.

"Good and you?" Shikamaru took out his keys and unlocked his door. He motioned for her to come inside.

"Great. I have something to tell you though." She said. He asked what it was. Chihiro took a deep breath, "Well, I don't know how put this, but I'm getting married."

Shikamaru couldn't and wouldn't bring himself to believe it. After a few minutes she added, "Since my parents died a while ago, I was wondering if you could give me away."

"Um, yeah." Was all Shikamaru could get out. First, Chihiro was getting married and now she wanted him to give her away. He wasn't sure how to handle it.

"Well, the wedding is in two months. Thank you. It means a lot." Chihiro said getting up to leave.

"What's the guy's name?" Shikamaru asked.

"Kohtaro Masashi. I'll see you later ok. I have to go and help him with something." Chihiro gave him a hug and said good-bye once more. It was then when he realized he would tell her how he felt.

The next two months went by fast. Unfortunatly, Shikamaru never got to tell Chihiro how he felt. It was finally her wedding day.

Chihiro had finished getting ready and looked beautiful like a bride should. She heard a knock on her dressing room door and yelled, "Who is it?"

"Shikamaru." Said the other side of the door. She opened the door and let him in. Shikamaru was breathless. Her long white dress fit her perfectly and swept lightly across the floor as she walked. Her brown hair cascaded down her back all the way to her bottom. It was now or never.

"Chihiro, I have something to tell you." Shikamaru said. She asked him to continue so he did. "I love you, Chihiro."

"Shikamaru..." She said softly and hugged him. "I love you too."

"Then why are you getting married to him?" Shikamaru asked.

"Because I love Kohtaro also. If you had told me before it wouldn't have to be like this. If this were another place, another time...another life then we could be together. Shikamaru you are one of my best friends nothing will change that, but I can't leave Kohtaro for you. I really do love you though." The two of them stayed quiet for several moments both with tears in their eyes."Will you still give me away?"
Shikamaru shook his head yes and said, "I will, but it's to bad this isn't another life."

The wedding march started and the wedding went on as plan. Although the two of them would never give each other their love to the fullest extant, they remained best friends. That was even after they grew old with their spouses and had grandchildren.
The ending kind of make me sad.
