Can't have you.

Running non-stop, Lauren twisted her ankle and ripped her dress slightly on a gate. Reaching a park, she slipped into it. Sliding down against a tree, she led her head against her knees. Right now, Lauren’s life seemed to be falling apart. Things at home in England were bad, she felt like her and Emily was drifting apart and now she is thought of as a user. Annoyed, she banged her head against the tree, gently though because she doesn’t like pain.

On the other side of town, Emily stood anxiously outside the restaurant, wandering slowly over to the jeep they’d earlier arrived in. The drops of rain from the earlier shower still remained as Emily leant across the bonnet of the jeep. Her back gradually became more wet as the drips of rain sunk into the seams of her black dress. She turned to face the busy road, wondering where Lauren could be. She tried to think of all of their favourite places, trying to imagine her exact movements. After spinning around on the spot familiarising herself with the surroundings, she burst into tears worrying about Lauren’s whereabouts.

Nick rushed out of the restaurant, not understanding what was going on or why Lauren had ran out like that. Kevin just behind him, he instantly wrapped his arms around his crying girlfriend. Tears had stained Emily’s face in the few minutes since she had left the restaurant. Scared, Nick dialled Laurens number, again and again. Each time not getting an answer. Annoyed and worried about his girlfriend, Nick swung a punch at a wall, only to be stopped by Joe. His closed hand covered by Joe’s big palms, was held just centimetres away from the wall.
“What’s going on? Where did Nick’s date go?’ Joe looked genuinely confused, when in fact he what was going on and why Lauren had left.

“I don’t know. And Nick’s date has a name ok, its Lauren.” Emily shouted, turning her face away from Kevin’s chest.

“Calm down, look Nick why don’t you ring her?” Joe looked at his younger, curly haired brother.

“Ive already done that Einstein, she wont answer” Nick answered Joe sourly.

“Look, Nick, why don’t you go and look for Lauren for a little bit. Ill take Emily home, she’s too upset to be out looking for Lauren.” Kevin spoke reasonably to Nick, rubbing Emily’s back soothingly while he spoke.

“Sure, look if Lauren gets back to the apartment, ring me straight away ok?” Nick looked at his oldest brother before turning away.

“I will” Kevin called after his brother before walking over to the Jeep with Emily.

Climbing into the jeep, Emily strapped herself as pulled Kevin pulled out of the parking space and left the car park. The only sound in the big car was the radio, playing softly in the background. Listening to the music, Emily’s thoughts were still on where Lauren could be. She racked her brains for every place that Lauren loved, always ending up at the ice cream parlour and the park not far from their apartment. Reaching the girls apartment, Kevin pulled into a space just in front of the doors. Getting out, Emily pulled at her dress, kicking the floor as she did so. Walking around the jeep, Kevin stood next to Emily, wrapping his arm around her; he pulled her into the apartment block. Once inside, Emily kicked off her heels, annoyed that they were causing her feet to hurt. Sitting down on the sofa, she played with the edge of her dress; Kevin sat down next to her, once again, wrapping his arm around her protectively.

Meanwhile, Nick wandered down the path, looking around him, in every window of open cafes and shops and round all corners. Reaching a café he knew, he walked in. ordering a hot chocolate to go, he paid and left again. Determined to find Lauren, he set back off down the street, clutching the polystyrene cup in his hands. He took a sip of the hot sickly drink, attempting to warm himself up in the cold LA air. Walking farther down the very long street, he spotted the girls apartment, a little farther down he remembered the park where he had taken Lauren on their first day. Walking straight past the apartment block, he hurried his pace; dropping his cup he carried on walking. Getting closer to the park, he saw a group of people standing around. Knowing that she may be there, but not wanting to be recognised by the girls, he walked in, but stopped by a tree. Sliding down the tree, he sat on the wet cold floor. Attempting to ring Lauren once again, he pulled his phone out of his pocket. Dialling the number he now knew off by heart, he let it ring, only to be cut off straight away. Lauren had turned her phone off to stop anyone getting hold of her.

Lauren sat, her back still against the tree, playing with the broken stitches on her dress. She had pulled her shoes off not long after arriving at the park, blisters now visible where they had rubbed. Annoyed, upset, disappointed and unconditionally in love with someone that she didn’t feel loved her back; she let the tears fall again. Behind her, on the other side of the tree, someone had just sat down, whoever it was, was trying to get hold of someone, failing in the process obviously. Ignoring the sigh, she leant her head against her knees again, humming to the song she had in her head, ‘Paranoid’, she let her thoughts drift to everyone in the restaurant, worried about Emily, she shook her head. She couldn’t let herself think of what was happening with her friend, they were best friends but she couldn’t see Emily worried about her for some reason, even though she knew Emily would be worried. On the other side of the tree, the new comer was listening to Lauren as she hummed along to the music in her head still. Wanting to get up and see who was there, Lauren stood. Listening for the person’s movements, she moved slightly, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. Annoyed she could no longer wear the shoes because the floor was hurting her feet.

Nick stood as he heard the person on the other side of the tree move; he had been listening to the person hum ‘Paranoid’, just moments before. Looking around the tree slightly, he couldn’t see anyone until he caught a glimpse of a blue dress, knowing instantly who it was, he ran around the tree. Running straight into Lauren, he smiled at her, before wrapping his arms around her. As he did so, she took a step back and shook his arms off of her. She didn’t want his arms around her, she didn’t want him to be there with her, she wanted to be alone and to be able to not worry about being in love with someone when, from what Lauren understood, didn’t feel the same way back.
