Can't have you.

28.

“Kevin, I need a favour. Well more Claire and Lauren do but still.” Emily sang while she moved to sit on Kevin.

“What?” Kevin asked, smiling at Emily.

“Well, the girls need to get 2 double bed mattresses so they were wondering if you could either take them or let them borrow your car.” Emily said smiling.

“Sure why not. When do you wanna get them?” Kevin smiled at Lauren and Claire.

“Well, I have to get my mum to sort out my money, like put some into my bank, which reminds me I gotta ring her. So by the end of week. I don’t know when yet though.” Lauren said shrugging.

“Ok, well tell me when yeah?” Kevin said.

“Yeah, of course. Thanks Kevin.” Lauren smiled.

“That’s ok.” He smiled.

“Right im going to ring my mum, be back in a minute.” Lauren said standing.

“Ok.” Nick said, grabbing Lauren’s hand and squeezing it gently.

Lauren walked off out into the kitchen where she perched herself against the side and rang the familiar number she knew as her mum’s. Meanwhile in the living room, Claire and Joe sat on the sofa, arms wrapped around each other like they had been together more than not even 25 hours. Emily and Kevin were sat just inside the balcony doors, also with their arms wrapped around each other as Kevin whispered sweet nothings into Emily’s ear. Nick sat in the same position as before Lauren left the room, looking through his phone at some of the text messages he had received from Lauren before they broke up and Lauren went back to England, he was determined he wasn’t going to loose her again.

“Hello?” Lauren’s mum, Cher, said.

“Hey mum, it’s me. I need you to do me a favour.” Lauren said.

“Oh hey Lauren, what do you need?” Cher asked her daughter.

“I need you to take some of the money out of the jar in my room at my flat and move it into my bank account please.” Lauren said, smiling.

“Sure, why do you need it?” Cher asked.

“We’ve got a place out here so we’re starting to buy things we aren’t going to bring over with us like our mirrors and lamps. But we’re almost out of money and need mattresses; Claire’s mum’s sorted out money for Claire already.” Lauren said.

“Oh right, ok well ill do that for you in a minute. How much do you need?”

“I need like £150. I still need to get a few more things.” Lauren said, annoyed at the fact she couldn’t just move everything with her.

“Ok, well ill sort that out for you now. Ive gotta go, bye.”

“Bye mum, love you.” Lauren said as her mum hung up.

Lauren stayed perched against the kitchen side for a little while, thinking about how much money she was spending on moving all the time and how annoyed she was at herself for falling for someone who lived in a different country than her. After a while, Lauren sauntered back into the living room to see Emily and Kevin smiling at each other, Claire and Joe kissing and Nick looking at his phone. Quickly, Lauren went over and slid onto the floor next to Nick, kissing his cheek slightly as she did so.

“Hey.” He smiled.

“Hey.” Lauren said, returning the smile.

“Your mums doing the money then.” Nick said.

“Yup.” Lauren smiled before calling to Kevin, “For crying out loud, will you propose already.”

Kevin looked back at Lauren and then winked before turning back to Emily and reaching into his pocket. He pulled out a little velvet black box and took Emily’s hand in his own.

“Emily, I know we’ve only known each other for not even a year yet but I love you and I never want to loose you. To make sure I don’t loose you I want to ask you something.” Kevin said, looking into Emily’s eyes lovingly.

“Ok.” She said, her voice shaking slightly.

“Will you marry me?” Kevin asked, worry evident on his face but not a dominant as the look of love.

“Yes!” Emily screamed before bursting into tears.

As Emily said yes, Lauren’s mouth dropped open in surprise; her best friend was now engaged. Nick looked at Lauren and pulled her close, kissing her gently before speaking.

“Maybe we’ll be the next ones.” Nick whispered only loud enough for Lauren to hear.

“Maybe.” Lauren whispered back, tears of joy welling in her eyes.

“Oh baby, don’t cry.” Nick said as he wrapped two big protective arms around her.

“Its ok, im happy.” Lauren said before pulling away from Nick and going to hug Emily and Kevin.

“You finally did it.” Lauren laughed as she hugged Kevin.

“I did.” He said smiling.

“Congratulations both of you.” Lauren said smiling before moving so everyone else could congratulate the newly engaged couple.

As Lauren moved back, Nick wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her head.

“Do you think that me and you would have been like those two if everything had been different?” He asked, his lips inches from her ear as he spoke gently.

“I don’t know. Maybe, we were a lot closer, we might have even already been engaged.” Lauren said laughing slightly, even though deep down she wished herself and Nick were like Emily and Kevin.

“I guess we might have been.” Nick said as he turned Lauren around in his arms.

“Yeah.” Lauren said softly, resting her head on Nick’s chest.

“Do you wanna go for a walk?” Nick asked Lauren as he smiled down at her.

“Yeah sure.” Lauren smiled up at him.

“Come on. Guys were gunna go for a walk. See you in a bit.” Nick said as he guided Lauren out of the apartment.

There was a chorus of byes and then the door was shut.

“Lets go.” Nick said, lacing their fingers and walking towards the stairs.

Lauren yanked back on Nick’s hand, making him stop and turn around to face her.

“Lets go down the lift.” Lauren said, her voice shaking.

“You don’t like lifts.” Nick said gently as he pulled her closer to him.

“I know, but remember when you guys made me go in the lift that night, the last night…” Lauren trailed off gently.

“Yeah, carry on.” Nick prompted her .

“Well, I went down the lift and I was fine because I was with you and I felt safe. I wanna see if it will still work. No I wanna prove that it will still work.” Lauren said as she pulled Nick closer to the lift and pressed the button.

“You don’t have to do this Lauren.” Nick said as he wrapped one arm around her, keeping their fingers laced with the other.

“No I do. Come on.” Lauren said as the lift doors opened and she pulled Nick inside.

The lift doors closed and Lauren instinctively moved closer to Nick and hid her face in his chest. As the lift began to move, Lauren felt a jolt in her stomach as the butterflies there began to swarm around inside of her.

“You didn’t have to do this.” Nick said as he felt Lauren tense up.

“Yes I did. Nick, I love you.” Lauren said, not moving her head from his chest.

“I love you too.”

“Good. Don’t leave me again.”

“I didn’t leave last time, but I promise I will never leave you. Even if it means I have to tie you to me or have to take you to Las Vegas so we can get married.” Nick laughed.

“Good, I don’t want you too leave me.” Lauren mumbled into his chest.

As the lift came to a halt, Lauren felt a sudden wave of sickness pass through her, the elevator had stopped, the lights were off and the doors weren’t opening. The lift had broken down.
Second update today, I think :)
