Can't have you.
16.
Emily fell asleep on Kevin’s chest, her tears had caused the deep sleep. While Emily slept, Lauren landed in England and wandered to get her bags and then back outside to get a taxi to her parents home.
Switching on her phone, Lauren checked for any messages or phone calls. There were a few from Kevin, a few from Emily, a few from her mum and even a few from Nick. Lauren ignored the calls from Nick, but sent text messages to Emily and Kevin telling them she had landed in England and that they shouldn’t bother ringing for a few days. After sending the text’s, Lauren dialled her mother’s mobile number. It rang a few times before she answered.
“Hello?” Lauren’s mum, Cher, spoke into the phone.
“Hey Mum, its me.” Lauren half smiled hearing the gentle loving voice of her mum.
“Lauren. I tried ringing you. Where are you? Why are you ringing now, shouldn’t you be sleeping?” Her mum sounded worried.
“I am at the airport. And no I shouldn’t be asleep because im in England. Im in the taxi now. Do you mind if I stay with you a while?” Lauren asked, slightly worried.
“Of course I don’t mind. Ill make up a bed for you. Why are you home though?” the worry in Lauren’s mum’s tone brought tears to Lauren’s eyes.
“Ill explain everything when I get home.” Lauren sniffed.
“Ok, ill see you in a little while.” Cher spoke softly.
“Ok mum, I love you.” Lauren said before hanging up.
Lauren slid down in the uncomfortable seat of the taxi slightly, covering her face with her arm to hide the tears that were falling from her eyes. If she hadn’t have been so stupid to react to what Nick had said she wouldn’t be in England now, she would be asleep in LA, maybe asleep in Nick’s arms.
Awakening to her alarm blaring, Emily stirred slightly. Kevin was sat at the end of the bed, looking at Emily, his eyes filled with love and worry.
“Hey.” He smiled gently at Emily.
“Hi.” Emily replied grogily.
“You ok?” Kevin asked, hoping for Emily to say yes.
“Uhm, I don’t know. Thank you for staying with me last night.” Emily smiled as she said the last part, moving to hug Kevin.
“That’s ok. You needed me yesterday, just like Nick is probably going to need me once he finds out Lauren’s gone.” Kevin said as he smiled down at Emily.
As Emily and Kevin sat together, Lauren pulled up outside of her parents home and paid the taxi driver. She climbed out and grabbed her things before walking up to the door. She knocked once before her older brother Kieran came bounding to the door. He swung it open and pulled Lauren into a hug instantly, knowing something was horribly wrong.
“Lauren, tell me what’s wrong.” Kieran sang into her ear.
“Let me go and then ill tell you and Mum and Dad.” Lauren squirmed.
“Ok.” Kieran let go of Lauren and dragged her backwards into the kitchen by her arm.
“Now tell us.” Kieran demanded before Lauren even got chance to say hi to her parents who sat at the table.
“Let me say hi to mum and dad first.” Lauren replied.
“Go on then.” Kieran urged.
“Hi, mum and dad.” Lauren smiled at them both.
“Now tell us!” Kieran demanded.
Lauren then went into telling her parents and brother what has happened in LA. She told them about how she had met Nick and that she thought she was in love with him, how her and Nick had broken up in a nasty way. She then went onto tell them about how depressed she got and how she got drunk, slapped Emily and then moved back.
Once she was finished, Lauren sighed. Her parents and brother understood everything and wanted to look after her. Lauren was hurried into her old bedroom which now had 2 beds in. Dana, one of Lauren’s younger sisters, had obviously moved into the room and now Lauren would be sharing it with her. After being left alone, Lauren collapased on the bed and crawled under the covers, pleased that Dana was still at school and wouldn’t be home until just before 4, leaving Lauren time to get some sleep.
As Lauren fell asleep in rainy Bristol in England, Emily was saying goodbye to Kevin who was going home to break the news to Nick that Lauren had left and there was a chance she wouldn’t be coming back. As Emily closed the door behind Kevin, she decided it was time to stop crying and moping, she had already done a whole day of that. Emily went to her room and pulled out an outfit. She jumped in the shower before getting out, drying, dressing and doing her hair. Emily had decided that she needed to go shopping because the food was almost gone and that she was going to need to get more shifts at work now that it was only going to be her paying for the rent of the pretty expensive apartment.
Leaving the apartment, Emily decided not to use Lauren’s car, she was going to save it for when Lauren came back. Instead of using the car, Emily hailed a cab. First she went to the small café she worked at, which was situated just off of the college campus. After arranging to work another 7 hours a week, Emily hailed another cab and went to the local supermarket. Grabbing a basket so she wouldn’t have loads to carry home, Emily wandered around the huge shop. She filled her basket with the necessities like milk, bread and butter, before paying and going home again.
When she walked into the apartment, the eerie silence stunned Emily. She wasn’t used to going out and coming home to a quite, life-less home. Smiling, Emily remembered times when Lauren had been busy doing things for college so Emily had gone to the shops on her own, the second the front door had opened, Lauren would come bounding out of the living room or her bedroom and into the hall to grab the bags to see if Emily had brought anything for her. That would probably never happen again now that she had gone back to England.
