Can't have you.

13.

The next morning was very stiff. The arguments from the night before still loomed in the apartment, one another’s harsh words echoing throughout the half-empty flat. Emily’s blistered feet traipsed around the apartment on the cold laminate flooring, carrying her through the living room and into the kitchen. She hung onto the marble worktop, reading Kevin’s post-it-note that he’d left her on the fridge.

‘Don’t worry, everything will be okay. I’ll call you and we can go for dinner tomorrow. Xxxx’

Emily pulled off the luminous yellow note, reading it again before throwing into the bin. She leant off of the side, reaching into one of the higher cupboards, pulling out a round, white bowl. She skipped across to the other cupboards, flicking a packet of Cornflakes carefully off of the shelf catching in her hands, grinning pleased with the catch. She grabbed the milk from the fridge, checking the sell by date carefully before realising the milk was two days old.

“Ewww” she whispered to herself, laughing slightly at her mistake. She also threw the carton of milk into the bin, it’s contents leaking all over the recycled paper and Kevin’s note. The reek of the old milk grew in the apartment, a sickly and stale smell. Emily rushed to open the balcony windows, before returning to her dry Cornflakes, crunching on them happily as she slumped into the sofa, about to reach for the remote.

A sudden roll of distant wheels in the background disturbed Emily from her cereal, before she turned to find Lauren walking meekly out of her room, a large roller suitcase lagging behind her. Lauren smiled at her, hoping for a reply, but her head simply turned back to the TV, before becoming engrossed once again in ‘The Jerry Springer Show’.

Lauren grimaced and turned to enter the kitchen, grabbing the bread from the cupboard, popping a few slices into the 4 slice toaster, she looked over the breakfast bar to see Emily, still slobbed out on the sofa. She turned back to the toaster, watching the turner going down, slowly but steadily. 3,2,1… beep! Lauren grabbed the hot toast in her hands, ignoring the heat, deciding against pulling a plate out from the cupboard. She jumped up onto the bar, her back to Emily, munching manically on the crispy toast. Her crunching echoed through the apartment lcearly, as Lauren’s preference to toast was burnt to a crisp, plain with no butter.

After finishing her toast, silence fell in the apartment once again, as lauren slid off of the side and sauntered over to the notice board. Quickly grabbing a pen and paper, she wrote a note for Emily.
‘Em, im sorry. My keys are on the side, so’s the key for my car. You might as well have it seeming as I cant take it to England with me. Im sorry for everything. Bye x’

Lauren looked longingly back at Emily, smiling, before throwing her keys on the bar. Emily did not move even slightly to uncover the source of the clanking of keys on the worktop. Laurne lifted up the handle of her roller suitcase, hobbling out of the apartment, awkwardly due to the heavy load dragging behind her. She undid the latch, the door had not been locked the night before, so she didn’t require her old keys. She stepped out the door, clicking the door shut behind her. By this time, Emily sat cross-legged on the sofa, tears in the corner of her eyes. She sniffed in relief and sadness, hoping for Lauren to stroll back into the apartment, laughing. She didn’t.

Lauren stood outside the apartment block, she opened her bag and rummaged through, checking that she had everything she needed. When she pulled her hand, her bare wrist caught her eye. Panic arose in her. Realising the friendship bracelet that Emily gave her when they wre 11 was missing. Lauren knew exactly where the bracelet was, it was on the bedside cabinet. She gazed up at their apartment, wondering if she should return to grab the little memory. A distant beeping beneath the howling wind swirling through the car park. The headlights of the taxi dimly shone through the mist of a dismal Thursday morning. She waved to the driver, recognising his arrival before reaching for her suitcase once again, ad wrapping her jacket tightly around her, battling her way through the cold winds.

As Lauren climbed into the taxi, she looked up to the window of the apartment. The curtains fluttered shut where Emily had been peeping out.

Muttering under her breath, lauren said, ‘Goodbye Em, good luck’.

The taxi driver reveved the engine, pulling gently away from the curb. The engine rumbling softly in the cold air of the morning.

Emily shut the curtain gently, trapping any of the morning lifht getting into the apartment. Emily wandered helplessly around the apartment, ending up, perched on the edge of Lauren’s bed, admiring the blue painted wall, surrounded by 3 other pure white walls. She flicked on the bright twinkling lights, gazing at their rays reflecting off of the glistening mirror at the center of the blue wall. She reached out to look at the pictures stuck messily around the mirror, remembering some of their greatest memories. Pictures of the girls at various clubs and bars were scattered around as well as some holiday snaps of their trip to Disneyland, Florida. Emily caught sight of a tourn picture of Nick and Lauren, Lauren kissing Nick cheekily in a photo booth, laying lonely at the bottom of Lauren’s bin. Emily turned her head back to the photos, recognising a small plastic object resting gently on the bedside cabinet. Emily reached out for it sadly, her heart feeling as if it were in her throat, realising Laurne had left it behind, she placed it on her wrist safely, next to her identical bracelet from Lauren. Emily was puzzled if she had left it behind on purpose. Running back to the window, she say the dim headlights of the taxi in the distance, pulling out of the carpark, and Lauren’s silhouette looking back sadly, up at Emily. Emily wrapped her free hand around the bracelet on her right arm, squezzing it tightly as the dark taxi went down the road and out of sight.
