Can't have you.
11.
After a rough night’s sleep once again, Emily was sprawled across the sofa, bleary eyed, staring blankly at the television screen. A countless amount of television adds scrolled along the screen, advertising various gadgets and gizmos that neither of the girls could even imagine to afford.
“Pfttt.” Emily spoke to herself with annoyance. She turned round slowly, trying to lift herself up from her awkward position to face the door where Lauren had just emerged from. Lauren smiled glumly at Emily, Emily smiling back sympathetically at her.
“Hey Lauren. How are y…” Just as Emily began to talk, there was a sudden rap at the door. Both girls turned to face their large, white door, and then turning back to face each other puzzled. Emily started to heave herself up off of the sofa before Lauren looked at her wisely, nodding to her saying that she would answer the door. Lauren took a deep breath expecting Nick to be looking in through the door at her longingly, but to her surprise a person burst through the door as soon as she slid it open slightly.
Confused and oblivious to the situation unfolding before her eyes. She turned baffled to see the reason for her depression, insecurity and heartache. It was Camilla. Emily looked up to the door leading to the hallway casually before changing her facial expression completely. Emily screwed up her face in anger, pulling herself up from the sofa she’d been moulded into.
“What are you doing here?” Lauren asked.
“I’m here to see you. You ruined my chances with Joe, we were great together.” The witch replied hoarsely because of the tears she had obviously been crying.
“Great together? You were a disaster waiting to happen. Me and Nick, we were great together…” Lauren replied, gradually becoming more sullen as she spoke.
“No, you would never have been good together. Don’t worry, this will be leaked, nobody will not know about all of this. About how YOU were the reason for my split from Joe. Oh and don’t forget about how you were in it for the money, the fame, and the publicity. You’re a lousy gold digger Lauren. How long were you together… less than a month wasn’t it? He obviously realised what you were in it for.” Camilla replied hurtfully.
Emily jumped up in a bout of rage, ready to defend her best friend. Lauren at this point, was welling up with tears, attempting not to cry in front of Camilla. Fighting the urge to make her fist into a ball and swing for the actress, Lauren cursed under her breath. Her anger had been a problem since she was younger but right now it was the worst it had ever been. Sighing in frustration, Lauren walked to the door.
Swinging the door open she said, “I think its time for you to go Camilla. And don’t bother coming back”, the anger was evident in her now loud voice.
“Whatever, I wasn’t planning staying in this dump anyway, I wouldn’t want to get caught here now would I? Think of what it could to do my reputation.” Camilla snarled as she slid on her sunglasses and left the apartment.
Slamming the door shut, Lauren walked to her room. Once inside in the safety of her little world, she slid down the wall and let the tears flow freely. On the other side of the door, Emily stood. Knocking on the door as loud as she could, she shouted through the door at her best friend who was obviously crying. Slamming her fist against the wooden door, Emily banged repeatedly. After 5 minutes, the frustrated and tired Emily left Lauren. Hoping she would calm down soon enough, Emily started cooking something for dinner. Settling on chicken stir fry, Emily began to prepare the food. She cut the chicken, then washed her hands before starting to prepare the vegetables.
As Emily put all the bits of food into the wok, Lauren left her room. She was wearing a white top, black shorts and a pair of white pumps. She finished her outfit with a black clutch bag and a black cardigan. Her hair had been styled so that random parts were curled, her fringe straight and the rest also straight. Lauren looked as if nothing had happened the past few days, she wore a smile on her face, her now pale lips from the lip gloss shinning in the light. Walking into the kitchen, Lauren opened her bag to make sure that everything was still in there, her old phone after throwing her new one out of the window, keys, money, and id, were all in place in the little bag. Chucking in her lip gloss into the overcrowded bag, Lauren snapped it closed. Emily stood, shocked at how her friend had changed so much in just a few hours. This morning she had been a wreck, hardly keeping her cool when Camilla had came round to their little apartment uninvited. Now she looked as if she was ready and raring to go out for the night, even though it was only early afternoon, and looked as if she had completely forgotten everything from the past few days, the argument with Nick, what happened at the restaurant, and Camilla’s unwanted visit. Leaning against the side slightly so that she wouldn’t fall over from shock, Emily looked her unrecognisable friend over, this girl wasn’t Lauren, she was someone who had simply changed bodies with her, and out there somewhere, was a girl crumpled on the floor, depressed, for unknown reasons to her friends and family.
Lauren stood, hand on one hip, the other clutching her little bag by her side. Emily couldn’t shake the image from when Lauren had been crying so much, her puffy red eyes had long gone now, out of her head. Emily smiled, unsure of how to react to the sudden change, she didn’t want to upset Lauren again, so stood debating on what to say when Lauren spoke out.
“Em, im going out for a few hours. Im gunna go shopping, come home, dump the stuff and then im off out for the night. You should get Kevin to come round, keep you company, if you don’t wanna come with me” Lauren’s hard face changed, she was smiling more softly now, Emily decided that this really was Lauren, she was just putting on a show, to hide her feelings like normal.
“Are you sure you want to? I mean, don’t you think you should stay in today, you didn’t really sleep last night and then the whole thing with Camilla this…” Emily was cut short by Lauren interrupting her.
“Look, Emily, I know you’re doing this because you care, but seriously forget it. Im fine, you don’t need to be worried about. Now do you wanna come with me or are you gunna get Kevin to come over?” Lauren looked her friend up and down, looking for a sign of her being disgraced at Lauren. There was none.
“I don’t think ill go.” Emily smiled at Lauren, wanting to keep her happy.
“Well, ring Kevin then. I don’t want you in the house on your own just in case Camilla comes back” Lauren screwed her name up as she said Camilla’s name.
“I don’t think I should Lauren, I mean after everything last night” Emily shrugged, unable to think of a way to make Lauren stay home.
“Look, if you don’t phone him, I will” Lauren reached for Emily’s phone and quickly grabbed it. Scrolling through the contacts, she found Kevin’s name and pressed call. The phone rang a few times before someone answered. It wasn’t the person she thought would answer it though.
“Hello” the all too familiar voice asked.
“Uh, Emily, your phone, take it quickly” Lauren held the phone from her ear, but Nick had already heard her voice.
“Lauren? Lauren, please let me talk to you” Nick rambled on through the phone.
“Emily, take it” Lauren pushed the phone into Emily’s hand, a look that was unreadable on her face.
“Hello?” Emily was now speaking into the phone, at the same time she was trying to read her friends facial expressions. Emily continuously replied awkwardly to questions that Nick asked her repeatedly. She looked at Lauren uncomfortably, not knowing whether she should just hang up or tell Nick to put Kevin on. Finally she got to courage to do something about the uncomfortable feeling in the air.
“Look Nick, I really need to speak to Kevin. And Lauren doesn’t really need to hear me speaking about her to you when she’s in the room. Can you just put Kevin on please?” Emily felt bad for doing it, but she knew it had to be done.
“Uhm, yeh sure. Here” Emily heard the passing of the phone before hearing Kevin’s voice. Speaking gently to Kevin, Emily noticed Lauren’s expression change, she didn’t look as worried now that Emily was no longer talking to Kevin, and she looked at peace.
Almost out of thin air, Lauren turned on her heal, picking her small clutch bag that she had dropped when Nick answered Kevin’s phone, before leaving. Emily watched as Lauren sauntered out of the apartment, clutch bag in hand, and swinging her car keys around a finger on her other hand. As Lauren left the apartment, an awkward silence filled the apartment, even though Emily was on the phone.
