The Quiet
One-Shot
Brian had to get away. The large group of people at his house was suffocating him. He loved his friends and family but today he needed air and as he walked away from their loud voices and evident happiness he wandered onto a small lane he had never seen.
The small building at the end of the lane was where he found the solace he needed. Never a very religious person Brian was unsure why the small church was pulling at him but as it was Easter he walked in and decided to seek peace in the quite he found.
The church was almost empty, there was an elderly couple talking in hushed tones to the minister and a woman around his age sitting in the front pew with her head down. Again something pulled him and he found himself sitting next to the woman, who now that he say her, was beautiful in his eyes. She didn’t even seem to realize he was there; she was so wrapped up in her thoughts. But something caught Brian’s attention as she shifted, her necklace. It appeared to be a very warped version if a crucifix. The cross was a black tree, the branches of which spanned out to form a heart. The man attached to the tree appeared to be an elf of some kind and he was made out of green plastic. The whole thing seemed to be made out of the stuff. The thorns holding his hands were a stark pink with purple blood flowing out if the wounds. All in all it was the oddest piece of jewelry Brian had ever seen, he was fascinated.
Apparently he had been staring too hard as the next thing he knew the woman’s eyes moved to meet his and he was wrapped up in a sea of chocolate brown. Brian didn’t think he had ever blushed before but he was doing it now with the woman’s eyes on him. He felt ashamed to have brought her out of her thoughts.
“Hello” she whispered, as anything louder would have seemed out of place in the quiet place. Her voice was lovely.
“Hi, I’m sorry I was staring at you. You necklace is fascinating though.” Brian whispered back.
“Oh its fine. But thank you, my friend Tori took a jewelry making class and made it for me. I have one for each holiday. Valentines day is my favorite. Cupid is a skeleton firing flaming arrows,” she laughed as she said it and her laughter instantly brightened Brian’s mood. What was this woman doing to him?
“That’s rad. But if you don’t mind me asking what brings you here all alone on Easter?” his voice was hesitant, not wanting to pry too much or scare her away.
“Well Tori is working and my friend Aiden is visiting her family. My family is all far away and so I am all alone this year until Tori comes back at midnight. I’m not normally a very religious person, or well one that goes to church often, but tonight it seemed the best place to be. It was almost as if it was calling to me,” she smiled as she said it and her tone was warm when she spoke of her friends.
“How odd. I’m the same way, I don’t normally go to church but it pulled me here tonight. I had never even been on this street before. Only I was not alone, I escaped the loud and crazy atmosphere that was my house. My friends and I spend holidays together, with all of out families. It is a mad house with everyone there. I needed quiet.”
“That’s so cool you all come together like that. But I can see why it could be suffocating. I have issues just spending time with my family some years,” she smiled as she said it and Brian could see her trail off into memories as she spoke her last words. But soon she straightened up and had a look of realization cross her face, “oh I’m Tara by the way. How rude of me not to introduce my self.”
“Oh don’t worry. I am no better, my name is Brian though. And I’m sorry you came here for quiet and her I am talking your ear off. How rude of me,” Brian was hesitant as he wanted to talk to this Tara more. She was beautiful and seemed so chill but he was unsure of her thoughts towards him.
“Oh don’t worry. I don’t mind at all. Truthfully it’s nice to have someone to talk to. I was going to wait and talk to minister Andrews but he seems caught up with the Paxton’s and I know how long they can talk for. Although if you would like some quiet I don’t mind letting you have it,” she smiled as she said it but Brian could see the small ounce of hope in her eyes that he wouldn’t need that quiet and suddenly he didn’t.
“No that’s fine. Getting out of the house for a little bit was all I needed and I should get back soon before they realize I was gone,” seeing her face fall at these word he rushed to finish his sentence, “but you are welcome to join me if you would like. It’s Easter and no one should be alone. Just know my friends are a bit crazy and have no boundaries that I can find.”
“Oh I wouldn’t want to intrude. You hardly know me and,” but she never finished what she was going to say as Brian had taken it upon himself to grab her hand and pull her up and then out of the small church into the cool night air.
“We can talk the long way home to give us a little more time before the craziness. And I’ll tell you all about my friends so you don’t feel out of place,” he was excited all of the sudden to bring her home with him.
The next half hour was spent with them walking slowly to Brian’s house, taking the longest rout possible. In that time Brian and Tara learned a lot about each other and Brian couldn’t wait to learn more. This girl was truly remarkable and she looked as if she would fit right in with his friends. That idea was cemented in his mind when he saw the smile on her face as she gazed on his house.
She looked like she was home. And truthfully she was.
