Bend Me Break Me Anyway You Need Me
One out of One
Seven friends scattered themselves throughout a living room in one New York apartment. Each group of three or four had a box in front of them and all were rummaging through the boxes seeing what old embarrassing moments they could find. Suddenly a loud boom of laughter was heard throughout the apartment. Frank Iero held up what appeared to be a very large...something.
"What the hell is that?!" Mikey Way yelled in shock.
All Frank did was drop the article he had to the floor and laughed while holding his sides.
Gerard Way picked the dropped item and his eyes grew wide in realization.
"Dude..." Gerard started.
Bob Bryar stared at whatever Gerard was holding. "I don't get it."
A brunette stopped her giggling to answer the many questions she knew the whole gang was thinking. "It's a bathing suit."
More laughter erupted through Frank taking Ray Toro with him while the others stared in shock.
"A what!?" Mikey screeched once again.
The brunette giggled. "It's dearest Scout's old bathing suit."
A raven haired woman glared at the brunette. "Shut up, Melissa."
Mel grinned. "What did I do?"
Gerard Way smirked. "Here I thought it was to cover the whole state of Connecticut when it rains."
Scout threw the apple she was eating at Gerard as the group laughed and muttered. "You're one to talk."
Gerard grumbled as the group laughed more.
"Them are fightin' words!" Mel giggled out.
Scout shook her head and dug deeper into the box and pulled out a tape. Mel looked at the tape as well. Gerard, Ray, Bob, Mikey, and Frank looked at Mel and Scout.
"What's that?" they asked simultaneously and stared at each other.
Scout giggled. "Verbal orgy."
Frank cracked a grin and snatched the tape away to examine it. "Why don't you put it on and watch it?"
"Because we don't believe in VCRs any more..?" Mel stated.
Ray looked at the entertainment center and chuckled. "Would you look at that? You don't have a VCR."
"Well, I want to see it," Bob announced and Frank quickly agreed.
"Where are we going to go?" asked Mikey.
"The real question is...who still has a VCR?" Ray mused.
"We could go to our parents place. I have to get some stuff there anyways," Gerard offered while quickly glancing at Mikey. The gang nodded.
"Tomorrow," Mel said.
"Why tomorrow?" Mikey asked.
Before Mel opened her mouth to tell a small lie, Scout answered for her. "She's going on a date."
As soon as Scout uttered those words, her eyes widened and she quickly covered her mouth automatically feeling guilty. Gerard turned his gaze to the floor. For years months he had been trying to get the courage to tell her. Everyone knew about his "little crush" on Mel. Hell, even she knew, but chose to ignore it in fear of ruining their friendship.
Bob cleared his throat to ease the awkward silence. "Uh...we'll get going then."
Mel and Scout nodded as then boys stood up to go to their own apartments. They said their good-byes and Mel shared an awkward hug with Gerard. Once they left, Mel slapped Scout upside the head.
"Owwwww!" Scout whined and innocently asked as Mel glared at her. "What did I do?"
"Shut up, Bekkaboo," Mel bitterly mocked. It was Scout's turn to glare. Mel went to her room to change for her date.
----------------
Ray, Bob, Frank, and Gerard decided to go to Gerard's place to hang out and help Gerard cope with the news of Mel's date. Mikey had departed from the group to have dinner with his wife.
Frank patted his long-time friend and band member on the back. "You just have to hang in there. It's gonna happen!"
Gerard sighed. "And how do you know that?"
Frank took a moment to figure out what he was going to say. ".....Because she's your lobster."
Ray and Bob snorted and Gerard stared at Frankie. "What?"
"She's your lobster!" Frank exclaimed.
Gerard looked at Ray and Bob in desperation.
Ray laughed. "Oh, he's going somewhere."
Frank shook his head at the three of them. "Come on guys, it's a known fact that lobsters fall in love and mate for life. You know what; you can actually see old lobster couples walking around their tank, you know, holding claws..." Frank emphasized his point by using both of his hands as lobster claws holding each other.
Gerard shook his head in disbelief. "You are........one special person, Frank."
Frank grinned. "Thanks."
---------------
Frank bounced in place while gripping the video tape, waiting for Gerard to open the door of his parents' home. As soon as Gerard opened the door, Frank ran towards the living room. The others, which consisted of Ray, Bob, Gerard, Mikey, Alicia, Mel, Jamia, and Scout, walked calmly in. Gerard headed towards his old room to get what he needed.
"Where are your parents, Mikey?" Alicia asked.
Mikey shrugged. "I don't know."
Scout rolled her eyes. "What a great son you make."
Mikey nodded. "I know."
Mel giggled as she walked to where Frank was. The others followed immediately.
"I don't see what's so exciting about watching a video tape," Jamia said.
Frank nodded while putting the video in the VCR. "It's the mystery of the tape that intrigues us, sweetie."
Once Frank pressed play an image of a room showed.
The camera suddenly turned on and showed Donna Way in front of the door.
"Say 'hello' to the camera," the voice of Donald Way was heard. He was the one filming.
"Oh, Donald, stop. This isn't the time to play around. Today is a special day. It's-" The sound of the door bell had interrupted Donna. Donna walked a few step to the door and opened it. An eighteen year old Mel walked in.
Everyone stared at the TV screen then at Mel.
"Oh, sweet Jesus. What the hell am I wearing?" Mel said with a horrified expression on her face.
Scout's eyes lit up with realization. "Oh my god. Dude, this is our prom video!"
Right at that moment, Gerard had stepped into the living room and stared at the home video that was playing. "M-maybe we sh-shouldn’t see this. You know, you don't want to relive those embarrassing moments," Gerard let a nervous laugh pass through his lips.
There were several disagreeing statements that overpowered Gerard's bad attempt to turn off the TV. Gerard did nothing, but sigh and stay where he was.
Mel stood next to Donna and fidgeted with the top portion of her prom dress. Donna sighed as she called her only daughter once more. "Scout? Mel's here! Where she?"
Scout's voice sounded through the television. "I'm right here."
A...larger version of Scout entered the screen.
"How do you zoom out?" Donald asked. The camera zoomed out and Scout waved at the camera.
Everyone, but Bob laughed.
Bob stared at the screen. "Some girl ate Scout."
Scout narrowed her eyes at Bob. "Shut up! The camera adds ten pounds!"
"Oh...so how many cameras are actually on you?" Frank asked.
Scout flipped Frank off and said nothing.
"Oh my god, Mel!" Scout squealed and ran to her best friend then hugged her with a sandwich in hand. "You look great! Oh! Oops."
Mel pulled away from the hug. "What?"
"Shoot. I got mayonnaise on you," Scout said wiping the mayonnaise she left on Mel's bare shoulder off.
"It's okay. You didn't get it on the dress," Mel smiled.
Another set of laughter came from the gang and Gerard melted at the sight Mel's smile.
Both girls looked at the camera and slightly turned away.
"Daaaad. Stop recording," Scout whined.
"I did," replied Donald.
"Nuh-uh. The red light is on."
"That's the off light."
Both girls stared at Donald.
"It is that right, Gerard?" Donald turned the camera to a twenty-year old, slightly chubby Gerard.
Gerard groaned when he saw himself. It was obvious to everyone who he was staring at. The others laughed.
"It's chubby Gerard!" Mikey laughed out.
"Fuck off," Gerard muttered and quickly glanced at Mel. Her eyes were still on the television screen.
"I think you look adorable," Mel softly stated. Gerard blushed and thanked God no one was paying attention to him.
The scene had changed and was now in the living room. It was only Gerard and Mel...and Donald, the cameraman.
"So..." Gerard started.
"Yeah," Mel said while fixing the top part of her dress.
"You look nice," Gerard said looking down.
"Thanks," A moment of an awkward silence passed.
"What are you doing during the summer?" Mel asked fixing her dress again.
"Working on my music and art...and stuff," Gerard said.
Mel nodded and fixed her dress once again then gave an irritated sigh. "Are the top hooks hooked? Could you hook them for me? This dress keeps sliding down." Mel turned and faced her back to Gerard.
Gerard's nervous expression was clear in the video as he slowly reached for the top hook. "Yeah..." Gerard hooked them together and let his hand linger. "What are you-?"
The door bell rang and Mel excitedly went to the door. "It's the boys!"
"....doing this summer...?" Gerard watched her run off.
Ray looked Gerard. "'Work on your music and art and stuff'?"
Gerard shrugged. "I don't know."
The camera was on Gerard, who was drawing something, well, someone. It had zoomed out and showed Scout and her date pinning a corsage on Scout.
Mel giggled. "Adam should see this."
Scout looked at Mel. "You show him this and I will make your life hell."
"Meeting you already made my life hell," Mel smirked.
Scout grinned.
Mel was next to them; her face was pulled to a pout. "When is Jake getting here?"
Scout's date, Matt, looked at Mel. "He's coming. Take a chill pill, will ya?"
Mel rolled her eyes. Once Matt was done, he went off somewhere. Scout then leaned in and whispered in Mel's ear. Mel and Scout giggled.
Mel and Scout laughed; Scout turned. "I just told Mel that Matt touched my boob."
Everyone laughed.
Mel was now crying and being comforted by Scout.
"I can't believe he didn't show up," Mel sniffled. Mrs. Way handed Mel a tissue and Mel blew her nose. "I can't go to prom without a date. This is so harsh."
Scout hugged her best friend. "Well, if you're not going, then I'm not going to prom either."
Matt stood up and walked off. "I'm gonna kick Jake's ass."
The camera followed Matt until he walked by Gerard and Donna.
"Sweetie? Why don't you take Mel to the prom?" Donna asked her eldest son.
Gerard looked up from his sketch pad. "No."
Donna sighed. "Come on, Gerard. She'll want to go with you."
Gerard scoffed.
Donna turned to the camera. "Don. Talk to him."
The camera shifted and Donald was in the view. "Son...."
"Dad..."
"Gerard, take Mel to her prom."
Mel was now watching the screen intently while Gerard shifted uncomfortably.
"Gerard, this is an important thing for her. You'll make her happy." Donald reasoned.
Gerard bit his and looked at Mel, who was still crying. "....Fine. Hold this." Gerard gave his sketch pad to his father and ran to his to change into a formal suit.
"There you go, son."
"There's no point watching this anymore so why don't we turn it off and get something to eat? How about sushi? Mikey, you love sushi!" Gerard tried to distract his friends by walking up to the television. He was given many shouts of "NO!" so he hesitantly walked back to his spot against a wall. Gerard nervously gazed back to the television.
"Here he comes!" Donald said as he walked out of Gerard's room.
Gerard came out in a suit and started his walk to the living room. He took his mother's flowers out of their vase and gently shook the water off. Gerard looked at the camera and smiled.
"Ready, son?"
"Ready, dad."
Donald walked further along.
"Mel....here comes your knight in..." Donald began to say, but his words slowly faded away as he saw Scout, Matt, Mel, and Jake leave out the door "....shining.....armor...."
"Bye, guys! Don't wait up!"
"Oh...." Donna said and turned her focus on Gerard.
Gerard was frozen in place. His hazel eyes held nothing, but heartbreak.
Gerard looked down as he remembered the pain he felt. Mel slowly blinked, not believing what she had just seen.
Gerard still had that heartbroken look on his face.
"Don, how do you turn this thing off?"
"The red button, Donna."
"What red button?"
"This one" The television screen went black.
Everyone but Mel slowly turned their attention to Gerard. Gerard did not say anything, he merely kept his gaze to his shoes.
Scout sat up straight as Mel kept staring at the blank screen. "I can't believe you did that."
Gerard looked up then back down. "Yeah, well...."
Mel turned and gazed at Gerard's figure. She then stood up and made her way to Gerard. Her hands placed themselves on Gerard's chest and moved to his neck, pulling him down to her, and crashing their lips together. Everyone else grinned and silently cheered.
Frank grinned widely. "See! He's her lobster!"
